My dumb question of the day.

Haven't torn into my doors or started any kind of install yet, but wanted to know as it'd have a bearing on the gear I pick out.

    The door tweeter grill..
Is it by chance removable or possibly dissassembled from the door card?

If it could be removed / detached from the door card, it lends possibilities on what I might place behind it, either a tweet for a two way, or small mid for a 3-way.

Just curious, for you guys who've been in there behind the door card and done speaker work in your doors. Just gathering ideas at this point. I do have a sub coming though that aughta absolutely rock in that little access cab of my '13 TRD Sport. Gonna have a fun build thread on that hopefully.

You'll want to remove the door grill. The silver ring is just held on by a couple of tabs that you can push in from the back side. Past that, I don't remember off of the top of my head but I don't think you'll need to take out any plastic welds. Could be wrong.

Trick is finding a mid that fits to mate up nicely with these in sail 'pods'.

So I'm contemplating what's possible for mids in the stock tweeter location. Reason I asked.

Along with an SD-3 Sundown 10" sub and maybe possibly shoehorning 8" midbass in the doors (have no idea if that's possible).. Getting fired up about this project. Build thread coming for sure for a 3-way/sub build big time.

The factory tweeter location and the sail "pods" (panels) are two different things.

The sail panel is that little triangle shaped panel on top of the door panel at the front.

ooohhhhh, i'd love to see this happen

i contemplated the sails, but ultimately decided to put my tweeters in the pillars. i demo'd both locations and felt the pillars gave me more depth. also, my tweeters are quite large and i would need to build a substantial pod to get them to fit in the sails. those skills are well beyond my capabilities. downside with the pillars is that they're not quite as on-axis as i would like - again attributed to my lack of skills and building the proper mount. i would like to get them more on-axis to get more width.

since you linked DIYMA then you're probably aware of the NC following. i've been to a couple of the meets. a lot of good guys and some sweet sounding vehicles. one of the guys runs a shop in charlotte and does amazing work. i would like to him to finish off my pillars, but i can't really be without my vehicle for that amount of time - plus it's a 3+ hr drive for me.

You can fit an 8" into the door as long as the depth isn't too crazy.

Cool.. Yeah I'm thinking maybe an SB Acoustics or some other type of 8" that'd do well there.

Yep, going to the NC meet in April.

I've been told I aughta also consider just doing a Scanspeak 10F with that D3004 tweet in the pillar and call it done. Then the door can be reserved purely for mid-bass duty after serious sealing and treatment work. That's a thought.

Unless I choose to swap these NVX's out for the scans, then do the NVX's in the truck and step down to an easy very do-able 2-way with NVX mids/tweets and the Sundown SD-3 that just showed up today. 5-channels, powered by an 80PRS into a whopper 5-ch amp. Simple and clean. The huge SB29 / NVX XSPTW tweets would easily pull off a 2-way in the taco door. Super stealth. Also an option. I'm fickle. :) Depending on the flanges, might just replace these flushed into the door card instead of the stock grill in the door. Would fire better.

So new idea.. 2.5" wide-band drivers in door locations as "mid-up" in a simple 2-way.. . They also come with some slick looking grills.. Might look cool without the oem grills in the doors, maybe doing a beauty ring around it from the front side. It's a thought. So there are lots of options for these trucks it appears.
