2014 spare tire lock blocked by frame rail?

Went todrop my spare on my 14 5lug and wtf, the socket for the spare won't fit deep enough with the extension hook thru it. This means I can't spin it from behind the truck. I can get the socket on fine without the hook in it, it's buried behind a frame crossover so the hook won't let it sink into the lock star.

Anyone else had this one? I can't be the only guy? Lol!

Looks like I need a socket extension of about an inch to get the socket to actually fit.

I searched fir pics, the common lock out in front of the frame rail isn't how mine is installed. Do the dealers put these on? Did the install it on the wrong frame rail? I don't even know how they got the spare up, must have had a longer socket that doesn't use the hook extension???

I got it apart by trimming the hook down with a bench grinder. I've pulled the lock out, and went to a dealer who called in their main tech to eyeball it. He hadn't seen this one before, but said it wasn't possible to do with the stock hook in place either.

I've decided to leave the lock off and they are warranting a new end hook piece for my jack crank. The hook fits fine in the standard fitting and drops the spare without issue, I just wanted a new one as this is now half as wide as it should be and will break at some point.

I'd recommend dropping the spare if you haven't done so. Better to find out at home where I did than on the road.

 

This us how far I had to grind my hook to get the socket to bite the drive wheel star in the lock.

I'm pretty sure the hook isnt used to lower the spare. Just the square end of the extensions, link 2 together and insert it and it bites, then use the L shaped one with the square cutout on it to slip over the end and crank it down.
The hook you used is for the bottle jack....

 

Thanks for the info. Been thinking i need to drop the spare at some point. Just in case I have to do it in the dark sometime.

Eh, the extension socket is for the hook. I tried every different way, the square ends just rotate in the tool. The hook fits in the hole, the shaft lays in the slot, the clip secures the shaft and my dealership confirmed that.

I almost cut the tool and welded an inch or two into it to make it longer, but I'd rather never deal with this device again. The hook can now slide right into the drive as it had been done for decades. I doubt my spare will ever be a target fir theft.

If there is another way to use the provided tools, myself, two buddies who run a top notch auto diagnostics and towing shop and the Toyota tech couldn't figure it out. No mention of it in the manual in the spare tire section either.

I've used these on countless crappy jacks in car tire changes forever too.

 

I think you need another part for your hook.

This is what it should look like for the spare tire security device: Do you have this shiny adapter to go on the hook? I can't believe the dealer didn't know about this.

 

Yes, but on my truck that piece on the frame was. Behind the rail X frame above the spare. The socket piece is exactly the same as mine and fit my hook e tension just like that.

 

Just a note, that those pics are from a 1st gen.

 

My 14 tool is almost identical. The end that engages the drive on the truck protrudes about 10-15mm from memory. I thought it might pull out further to give me the extra inch or so it needed to catch but it's a solid piece. I couldn't pull it apart.

I'll report back when my new hook end arrives and I'm sure it actually works. For now the chopped one fits and works. If it doesn't fit I'll open the frame hole up a bit.

Anyway, I'd love to see how these parts could have worked as they were installed in my truck, but if nothing else, I'd recommend a dry run thru a tire change at home sooner than later! I've owned mine over a year and 26,000 miles! Lol!

In my case it mattered as the lock is recessed in the X frame. If it was outside of it the hook would not have been blocked from going deep enough to engage the splines on the tool and lock.

It's got the lock deleted now anyway, and the spare is back up in there too. I couldn't have gotten much of a pic while it was all together and blocked. The new design is a X, and the lock/spare chain spool in the middle of the X.

Maybe the lock itself was defective, or installed incorrectly? It basically fell out when I finally got the tire halfway down. By what I could see thru the spare rim, and feel with my fingers, the hook was hitting that frame rail, chopping it down on the sides let it finally engage the star wheel so I'm not really sure.

 

My hook works fine for lowering my spare, 2014 six lug though

 

Yeah, my son has a 15 4x4 2.7, no lock and his is fine too.
