My check engine light came on my '02 Tacoma 2.4 with a code of P0420. Brought it to a dealer
and they did a test and according to them both my front and rear catalyctic converters
needs to be replaced. Can both catalyctic converters be bad at the same time? They are charging me an arm and a leg.

I have no idea what kind of converter that is. #spellcheck.

The dealer is sort of right but a lot wrong. The code references inefficient catalytic converters. The cause isn't the cats, that's just the result of the cause. I'll bet your cats are fine. #meow

You might try checking your fuel pressure and fuel trims. I had the same code (2nd gen) and after lots of digging it turned out to be a weak/clogged fuel pump.
