good luck, the guy at my dealership said if it frayed or broken or not working right, non of that matters, according to him its only replaced due to rust issues.

mine doesn't tighten up all the way so the tire moves around but they wouldn't replace mine.

one day when I have time I think i'll see if I can take it apart and shorten the cable by putting an extra wrap on it around the cable reel, but I don't know if that is even possible

I was not anticipating this, but my truck failed the frame inspection. So it looks like I will be getting a new spare tire device by default.

well that's bad AND good news I suppose lol.

start thinking right now if you want any upgrades for suspension or anything.

I believe someone said you get new leafs with the frame but not much else (better confirm these details with them) so have a game plan since labor will be free for them to put back on anything they have to take off to swap frames so you need to know what you may want different put back on (if anything) and have it on hand when its time.

I would bet you have a few months to wait while they build your frame, they are built to order only so they start making a new one when Toyota orders a frame for it.

I searched via google and was not able to find complete list of the parts they replace. A lot of little things spread through the 50+ threads I read. I'll do some more searching tomorrow to see if I can come up with anything.

They said they would have the frame in 3-6 months.

Went to get the lower ball joint recall done today took 3 hours for them just to say they had to order the parts for it , and they said there was also this campaign, said that the tire carrier looked fine but they'd replace it anyway, works for me

    What state are you in?
Does anyone know if Wyoming is a "salt" State? Im in CA but I bought my Tacoma in WY last October... It all looks pretty rusty under there, I wonder if it will be honored here...?

anything considered as north where it snows and the salt the roads so your definitely in the rust covered zone if its a WY truck

I'm surprised you even got a letter in LA. Unless your truck is originally from a northern state and the owner info is updated.

Also you said it moves around, does the tire touch the holder arms on both sides or does it have space on either side?

another thought is if you or the previous owner tried cranking the cable up too much it stretched. however the internal continuously turns so there is no "stopping point" for the cable to retract so it should keep cranking in

mine goes until the tire "just" touches the bars but isn't held secure and the cable will not crank any farther after that point, so im not fully compressing the spring on the yoke to hold it tight. there does not appear to be any kinks or frays of the cable to explain why it stops (unless the cable stretched beyond its range to tighten which I cant see being possible) as far as I know, this thing has no stop to it, and it just cranks until the yoke bottoms out on the base.

with very little effort you can push the tire from side to side with the cable as tight as it goes.

I guess I need to buy one from a salvage truck if they aren't supposed to stop until all the way up (thats how I thought they worked) since Toyota wont replace it.

as to the letter, I think its because of salt water exposure down here backing trailers into salt water is most likely why I got the letter. the truck was bought new in texas and then went to Alabama before coming here.

Keaker, turn the rim over so the off set (outside of rim) part is pointing down. this will give you another few inches and will prevent the plate/yoke from bottoming out. I've had mine like this for awhile so I can check tire pressure on the spare without having to be a contortionist. :)

that's how I always do it for the same reason of adding air but mainly because its easier to put the yoke in place and requires less cranking to lower and raise it back into position. I have never had or seen one put in the other way around.

ps - what the hell you got hidden behind your spare? is that a dead body in that blue thing lol

how the hell do you replace these things anyway?

please don't tell me those bumps I see on the top of the cross brace are the bolts and the bed needs to be lifted to replace it.

haha that's not mine, grabbed it from the webs.

by default the spares were mounted outside rim up, helps prevent pooling of water due to the concave nature. maybe it's a north thing :notsure:

and yes, the bolts run through he cross-member and get pulled out through the top. pretty sure they just loosened my bed and replaced.
