I have a 97 tacoma 2.7. the previous owner cut the pigtail for the mass air flow. he replaced it with an aftermarket one which obviously wont match the stock wiring color code. the check engine light is on for the mass air flow and o2. i have replaced both so im thinking its the wiring. has anyone else ran into this issue before? i wired it up to get it to idle. but when i give it gas it sputters and backfires. if i ease into it its fine until high rpms then it sputters and cuts out. this is my daily and i need help bad. thanks guys.

might want to check the TPS it might be the sputtering issue.

I don't know how much "hacking" this guy did under the hood but I suggest you buy a new denso o2 sensor, then if you are sure all he did was cut the MAF wires AND you still have the original plug for it, then reconnect that and pick up a set of MAF and TPS sensors from a salvage yard to "affordably" restore you to stock OEM sensors, then you can determine whats right or wrong with it. if there are signs he messed with other wires then get a replacement under hood wiring harness for it from a salvage yard or ebay

i didn't even think of the tps. i was to focused on the check engine light issues. but he didn't do to much hacking. the only thing i found so far is the aftermarket maf pigtail. but i did manage to buy a oem o2 and maf. thanks for the reminder about the tps tho. totally slipped my mind.
