I removed the center dash panel to fix a stuck ignition switch and up pops the dreaded fat bastard light on the dash ( right next to the check wallet light)
It happened before a few years back when I got an aftermarket radio with free installation, It took them a few hours and a few phone calls to make it go away that time.
The passenger side airbag on/off switch is right there so I disconnected the battery ground ,removed the panel again and plugged and unplugged the yellow connectors . tried it three times and the light stayed on . So I cycled the airbag on/off keyswitch about 6 times with no luck. I gave up but after three starts the light went out and has stayed out.

I found a link to a pdf of a factory manual proceedure for clearing the airbomb light here by searching this gen1 forum but it must have been for the wrong year because the 16 pin DTC3 plug terminal locations did not match up at all.
My 16 pin DTC3 terminal only has 4 wires going to it
    in case it happens again:
Does anyone happen to know the proceedure for code reading or clearing the SRS warning light for a 1998 Tacoma x-cab 4x4 / 4cyl / 5 spd ? ( without Toyota factor DTC code reader) ?

You can make it tell you the error code:

The airbag computer is under the dash in the middle right on the hump. All the wires (that I know about) for the airbag system are yellow. Could you have jiggled the plug for the computer?
