I had one on my old 06. I installed it myself. After 6 years there was NO problems at all.

I am calling user error on this. I bet these 10 people you talk about installed it incorrectly. Either that or they regularly bent the brackets when opening the hood?

Ohhh.. ok you got me. So basically you are saying that the wind stream coming off a bug shield could deflect a bullet( which is essentially what a rock coming off of a tire is). ok i believe you. You sound so smart. :p you basically just described farting in a coffee mug.

If you have any education in aerodynamics at all, you should know the way air flows around objects. and that without an enclosed area, almost all of the air is going to flow around a stone not build up and push on the bottom of it. take for instance a musket loader. if you built it with a 3 inch barrel and put a .50 cal ball in it...it MIGHT roll out the end. because jsut like any other fluid, the air(gases) are going to take the path of least resistance.

All the smart people say user error so it's all your fault. Mine is also my fault even though the dealer installed it

    Can't fix stupid.

I hadn't yet commented on the wearing of the paint. That being said...
I believe that the tape/paint may be worn even with proper install depending on the frequency/amplitude of the vibrations present in the area. No two vehicles are going to have the same exact vibrations due to suspension and drive train. It is very plausible that out of a group of vehicles (all with well installed deflectors), some may exhibit the wear and others may not. Just my $.02

...and i also never blamed user error for any of the issues people are having.

Best post in the whole thread!

I think people need to clarify which bug deflector they are talking about. I know nothing about the oem one but I can say without a doubt the avs one I have helps reduce bugs on the window. Nothing will ever complete block them but it DOES help. (Disclaimer, I have no formal training in air flow, but I do know what a dead bug splattered on my windshield looks like)

    As needed, and some not.
Thought I would chime in since I recently took off my Toyota brand bug deflector with the metal brackets that hook around the hood from the underside. I installed it correctly fyi. So... upon taking it off, I immediately noticed that the metal had worn through the 3M tape due to vibrations. I had it on the truck for 3.5 years. If I were to do it again with this brand, I would probably periodically take it off and replace the 3M tape as needed. I simply didn't care... at the time. I can't tell if it helped my windshield stay anymore bug free. I do know that I have had my windshield replace 2x already (with the deflector on) and I just caught another rock last week (deflector off)! And I was not following any vehicles too closely either. It happens deflector or no deflector. Cheers.

I also have an EGR, it was actually on my truck when I bought it. After seeing others, I would have bought an EGR if my truck didn't come with it. My friend's 4th gen 4runner has an OEM one that i'm not very fond of. Like others have mentioned, the OEM ones have metal clips.

I just got an email from EGR saying my shield is on back order for 8+ weeks. What kind of bullschit is that? I cancelled my order.

Old thread bump with a question: Are the newer Toyota OEM (2015) any better or is the Weathertech really better?
I already bought a OEM but it is still in the box & don't have to use it!

Oem will end up scratching your hood. Stay away IMO. Weather tech or any other after market will be better. I had the Toyota at first but it ended up scratching my hood and I went weather tech after that.

Any pictures of how the aftermarket mount up? I was thinking of plasti dip the brackets along with the tape. I just as well sell off the oem if the aftermarket is better. It's cheaper than fixing rust & repainting the hood!

The weathertech has all plastic parts. They may break and need replacement after a few years but that's better than a rusted up hood. Installation will take 10 mins tops. As far as pics, Google should have a few.
