The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is walking into a suddenly competitive field of small(er) trucks, so its maker has resorted to a gimmick that might actually resonate with buyers.

According to Bloomberg, Toyota is banking on the 2016 Tacoma being the first vehicle with a standard GoPro camera mount in the windshield. GoPro camera mounts are popular additions, the cameras being the darling of those who want to document all of their outdoor activities. It sounds like Toyota is onto something with the active people who tend to lust after the Tacoma.

It's an important attention grab, though. The Tacoma has serious competition for the first time in roughly a decade with the introduction of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. For now, Toyota still leads the sector – more than 88,000 Tacomas have been sold in the U.S. through June, versus nearly 57,000 for the GM trucks combined.

Bloomberg says the deal is also important to GoPro, as its dominance as the camera of outdoorsy people is being challenged by Sony and Nikon. Making it easier to snap a GoPro into the Tacoma is likely to stop its users from switching to a rival's device.

The issue I had with the 2016 Tacoma at the Detroit Auto Show back in January was that it felt like an old truck just to sit in it, even though the Colorado and Canyon feel like new, modern vehicles. But then, we haven't driven the new Tacoma yet.

We'll get a GoPro and find out soon enough.

Sarcasm, I hope. Bloomberg is such a joke. I added a permanent Gopro mount to my 2nd gen for $40. $40 would not convince me to buy one vehicle over another.

I guess I'm the odd man out here, but i don't get it. What us with needing to document EVERYTHING? Have you been to a concert lately? There are probably more people staring at their phone recording the show than actually watching the show. I wonder how many of those videos are even watched?

I don't understand the burning desire to want to document everything either. What happened to living in the moments? People are so goddamn busy trying to "capture" the moment that they actually forget to experience and live the moment.

Made a bunch of stuff black.
You can buy a sticky mount for a GoPro way cheap, and stick it in any vehicle you want. Every GoPro comes with one even. It's a gimmick. Don't get me wrong though, I love my Tacoma and I love my GoPro.

I posted some time ago on this thread that you can buy the Go Pro mount from Deal Extreme for $4.25 shipped.

For 90% of the buyers audience these are as useful as nipples on a man. Who "documents" their driving adventures? I remember back in the day when video cameras came out everyone had to have one and then invite you over to watch videos of their kids playing in the pool or their family vacations. BORING! Do you think anyone wants to watch you driving? Do you think you're going to return to your videos of your driving to fondly remember them? Unless there is some freak event then who gives a crap? Give your head a shake. I'd like to take that damn Go Pro mount and shove it up Kevin Hunter's hind end.

I'll post this video again, it totally applies.

I'll take this truck for a test drive but to be honest I'm not holding out much hope at all.

They are going to sell several billion in Russia.

Russian, gents, we need to learn it. Posts are going to get even more incomprehensible.

Russians are too cheap to buy Go Pro's. They will get some cheapo Chinese dash cam. Plus they have the Hilux over there which does not come with a Go Pro mount. I guess with the Hilux Toyota focuses on what a typical truck buyer actually wants.

it's like buying a $5 mount, but with toyota's inflation cost to $500 and paying toyota to install it at $200 an hour.

The go pro mount is a great idea but if you want to capture the moment then have a friend run the camera and you just drive.
