3rz oil pump replacment interval

Hey everyone,
My oil pump is leaking on my 98 Tacoma 3rz. Going to replace it soon. Truck has 220,000 miles. Would you recommend I replace the oil pump as well? The oil pump cover too? Don't have any oil pressure problems but thinking since I'll be in there anyway. New pump and housing is about 100 bucks. Do they wear out? I've used synthetic blend since truck was new. Changed oil religiously every 5000 miles.

 

I've never heard of an internal oil pump requiring replacement on either Tacoma engine. How do you know the oil pump is leaking?

 

The oil pump is bolted to the front of the engine. It's actually the crank seal that is leaking but it's behind the oil pump.

 

I replaced the oil pump seal and crank seal at 185k and almost have 200k on it now.....no leaks anymore

When you pull the oil pump cover, you might as well replace the crank seal since its right there

 

Ah, I see. Didn't realize that.

 

The crank seal is in front of the oil pump. This engine has a timing chain, so the timing gear is behind the oil pump since the chain needs oil.

The oil pump cover is screwed onto the timing chain cover. There is an o-ring between the two that can leak also. There should be no reason to replace the drive/driven rotor pair, but you can measure them and compare to specs if your take it apart. The screws holding the pump cover on strip easily, so do some research how others removed them without stripping them. You can replace just the crank seal without removing the pump cover if you're sure that's the only leak (and not the o-ring behind the pump cover).

Only charged me $250 to do both seals

LC Engineering has a hex head screw kit that replaces the phillips screws.....I got it and my mechanic told me thanks you.....highly recommended

 

Wow that's not bad at all. At the dealership? I did order those screws from LCE

 

I'm not exactly sure which one is leaking. Hard to tell by looking at it. Anyway to determine which one it is? I bought both the oil pump o ring and crank seal to replace. You don't have to remove water pump or timing chain cover right? I did read about the Phillips head screws. I ordered the allen ones from LCE.

 

Not a dealership.....he has his own garage and business....he also has a 96 tacoma with the 2.7 also....his is leaking in the same spot....he said he is going to replace those seals as well.....water pump and timing chain cover Don't need to come off


I would replace both
