My buddies and I used to build baja bugs years ago during and after high school. Earily VWs were dangerous when they left the factory. Spent a fortune trying to squeeze anything we could out of the forty horse "power plant" and make them safe. Had to adjust the valves every 2500 mi. and re torque the heads every 5 K or so or else you would have"poping" heads. Brakes were almost non existant, the electrical system was from the Hindenberg and the ventilation system was straight out of a U boat.

I think I almost did this every time I changed my oil. The plugs were right next to each other.

I had a 1995 Dodge avenger at 6 yrs old/90k miles started to develop electrical issues. The car would randomly shut off without warning, I took it to 3 different shops which they were never able to find the problem after changing ECU and a few sensors. It shut off on me 7 times, once at 75 mph almost causing an accident. I sold the car for $1000 despite it being low mileage, mechanically sound and 100% rust free.

I had a mid 90s dodge stratus given to me when my grandfather passed that has the exact same issues, sold it to a shop for $500 cause the repairs were more than it was worth.

sounds almost like my 2001 5.4 Screw. All before selling at 92k:
plugs twice and 2 coils. 100k plugs my ass. better not leave them in that long
    intake gasket
repainted roof, Ford defect, water pooled in channels and caused paint to peel
3 sets front brake pads, women driver
    3 sets of tires
lower ball joints, Ford said I was lucky to make 42k some only go to 25
    fuel pump
cup holder, simple fix with some super glue but lived with the stupid thing sliding open for years, spring popped off in first 2
    spit number 6, last straw
used a quart of oil every 1000 miles with 5w20. finally went to 5w30 ad it might make 1500. Ford said quart per 1000 not excessive

I am sure that I forgot something.

This is how I feel about my 2010 528xi. In owning it one year I had a couple unexpected expensive problems and it was due for some wear and tear maintenance (suspension and brakes) that I didn't think should have to be done at the 50k mile mark. So I gave up on the European excitement and switched back to the Japanese reliability.

Because it's expensive, finicky, and gets dusted by things that cost a third as much and actually START every day? :burnrubber:

Dealer was the problem...the A/C idle motor was bad. (More likely, the CONNECTION to it was bad.) Same thing happened to my friend's Caravan...was a 10-minute fix that I think cost $20.

They were carb'd to 1989...but yeah, the Sammy is basically a street-legal enclosed quad.

Because plenty of them run forever. There is a reason cabbies run Fords 500,000+ miles!

Yeah, been there! My friend's wife had and loved an A4. It got stoled, so she decided to try an A6. MISTAKE! After three months of truly-bizarre electrical problems that nobody (including a dude that VAG flew in from Germany!) could fix, she lemon-lawed it. She is very happy with her Dodge Charger R/T Road-Track. :burnrubber::burnrubber:

1999 Dodge Dakota. Drove it for 110,000 miles.

Water pump went under 30,000 miles
Drivers side mirror cracked when it got cold a few times.
Tranny went right around 80,000 miles
Rear diff sounded like a grinder when I traded it in.(push on passenger side tire and it would clunk fairly loudly)
Drivers side upper ball joint went twice.
Fuel gauge stopped working one day which I found out while towing my boat on the highway 50 miles from home.
Paint on the roof faded away.

It's kind of ratty, but my 1995 Dakota is in no danger of rotting in half!

Oil pressure sending unit wire is loose, 5-minute fix. If it's a six...open the hood, lean over the passenger side and look at the oil filter. The connector that is just above it and pointing toward the firewall is the sending unit plug. Remove it (just pulls off), clean the glop out of it, reinstall. (Procedure should be the same for a V8, but I forget where the wire is.)

The VW Bug is the worst vehicle ever sold in the United States. Other than "cute", it actually did nothing well.

2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0T AWD Limited. Puked transmission fluid all over the road, unresolved suspension problems, unresolved engine problems. First engine check light they replaced a coil, second engine check light they replaced the injector, third engine check light they simply reset engine check light, fourth engine check light they replaced all four spark plugs. Three had a melted electrodes and the fourth was completely missing the porcelain insulator which followed the valve on it's downstroke. They had to do a bore scope to ensure the cylinder walls hadn't been scored and that there wasn't any hot spots on the valve. Fifth engine check light they replaced two spark plugs with melted electrodes. Flashed the ECU with updated software and said then engine was running too lean....ya think?:smack:

....and that's how I ended up with my Tacoma. Don't miss the POS one bit and absolutely LOVE my new 10yr old technology truck.

Tell the world - Don't buy a Hyundai....

Damn. Sure don't make them like they did back in the day. My wife absolutely refuses to get rid of her 2001 Chevy Tracker which has 215K kms on the ODO. The damn thing has never had a single problem and has saved our ass every time the Santa Fe broke down. The first time the Hyundai shit it's pants was when we were three hours away from home on a camping trip with our kids. Had to drive home, unload the Fe of all our gear and load up old faithful for the three hour drive back to where we had been.
