Front Wheel Stud Issues

    Hey All,

    I was taking my front wheel off to do some work and I noticed that one of the studs was stripped. The lug itself was stripped too, and crossthreaded. The last time the truck had its wheels off was at a Toyota Dealership, and I am thinking they put the lug on the wrong way. The lug itself is damaged, and the cap of the lug sheared off.

    Obviously i need a new lug and stud, but the most concerning thing is the stud that is stripped has play in it and wiggles. I am concerned that the stud has came unseated or that the wheel bearing is damaged. I need help guys, I am not sure what to do. I emailed the dealership to see what they can do.

    If they just stuck the nut into the socket on their impact and put it on NASCAR style, they most likely FUBARed it.

    You can go down there and make a scene and they'll blame anyone but themselves usually. But it's worth a shot. If you run aftermarket wheels, I'd suggest the rear studs from an '03ish Matrix. They're longer and will have more thread contact than the regular Tacoma front studs.

    Well would the wheel bearing be screwed up if the damn stud can wiggle? I mean studs are ribbed so they dont wiggle....

    used to have - 99 2.4L I4 5 lug & 04 prerunner v6
    they are just pressed in and have a spline tooth design so just tap the bad one out with a BFH and "pull" the new stud in using a double nut and washer to fully seat it all the way.

    just go to dealer and buy a new front stud and lug nut

    when you get it out they probably stripped the splines too and that's why its loose

    So the bearing is probably good, just a bad stud

    You have 5 other studs/nuts holding that wheel on. It's probly just fine. If you're paranoid do the normal wobble checks for wheel bearing play. I suggest trying to press the stud in as far as you can if possible. Then finish it off with the double nut and washer method. So it doesn't spin and bugger up the splines. To get to it you can flatten down the stone guard temporarily to press it in from the back. I replaced all my front studs with longer ones.
