Had an SLP. Sold it. It was the longer 20" model, and I just didn't love it. It was actually one of the first SLPs produced. I just couldn't ever get excited about it.

My favorite shotgun is actuly a Maverick 88. Aluminum receiver of the Mossberg 500 for light weight, and the cross bolt safety of the Rem 870 which I've always found faster and easier to use than the Mossy thumb safety. And cheap. But I still want an M4.

A buddy has an FN SLP, and like @Polymerhead I can't love it...it feels well built, but it seems to jam at least once every mag on us every time he's brought it out

holy shit, now I want those on principle alone. And while i save up some money, I think I'll stick with my regular open carry (SW.40) strong side, can of bear spray on the pack and a maybe ruger alaskan weak side (ankle holster?).

I'd personally have a short 12ga (faster to get on target than a long barrel), bear spray, and maybe a 44mag if I was going to be walking around grizz country. Carry the shotgun in front of you for faster deployment. If you're with somebody, obviously split up the firepower. If you're with somebody who isn't a good shot, give them the bear spray.

The idea of bear defense is getting as much lead moving as possible. So a reliable pump is better than an unreliable auto, and a reliable auto is better than a reliable pump.

For you guys looking for a chest rig, here's a superb option:

    https://www.hillpeoplegear.com/Products/tabid/762/CategoryID/1/ProductID/5/Default.aspx

I used to have one - one of my buddies "borrowed" it for a weekend hiking trip in order to carry his S&W 586...and I got handed a $100 bill a few days later.

There are other models available, but the addition of the MOLLE/PALS webbing allows for an extra mag pouch, flashlight, and a mini admin kit right on top. The drawstroke's very similar to most fanny packs - grab with your offhand in the opposing corner, pull swiftly, and Bob's your uncle.

Buying another one in the future.

It's slightly larger, but in essence that's a pretty close approximation of size. It's a chest mounted bag with two compartments. The one closest to your chest is open, save for some female velcro and a nylon fabric loop for attaching a kydex trigger guard cover (e.g., RCS Vanguard or Dale Fricke's Zacchaeus). The other compartment contains two pockets, roughly 4" wide, that'll hold anything from extra pistol mags to an iPhone.

There's also an optional elastic strap that stabilizes the bag for running. First Spear makes them for HPG, and the quality is there.

Yeah I was checking out their runner's bag too. I like the idea of that location for running, won't move much, get drenched in sweat. Just not sure I want to look like I'm wearing a bra while running lol.

Hiking/hunting, I actually still have some old H gear.

Hey guys. Picked up a S&W SD9 VE over the weekend. For those of you with 9MM, what is your favorite ammo to use at the range? I picked up a 100 round value pack of Remington 9MM Luger for the range and one box of 20 round Remington Ultimate Defense. Hopefully I'll never have to use the Ultimate Defense.

I like Speer Lawman or surplus Winchester's 9mm NATO load for practice. Winchester Ranger-T in 127-grain +P+ or the 147-grain bonded load for carry.

Cool thanks! I saw the Winchester but can't say I've ever seen Speer Lawman. I think there was a deal on it as well can't remember though.

I like whatever I can find on sale for range use...regardless of caliber....I also buy several boxes of whatever defensive ammo I want to run, and run a bunch of it thru a gun when it's new to me too to ensure it will function properly and hit where I'm aiming

I hadn't thought about running the defensive ammo thru the gun to ensure proper function. Mainly because of the cost but you do bring up a good point. We plan on heading to our range this weekend to shoot some targets. Should be a fun afternoon! I gotta find some more .22 ammo for my wife's Walther. I doubt I'll get that lucky though.

    I need some of that

none of the local shops keep the 147gr in stock and the G43 eats that like it's designed just for it...
