First off did you remove the resistor to go lower on the band?

I'm not going to alter the radio. If the handheld can tune to that frequency then I'll use that.

They both have to have a resistor removed to reach the channels we frequent. thats because most dont have licenses and we can get away with it lower...

The programming doesn't prohibit tuning in that range?

    My handheld
has no modifications to it. And I have zero issues recieving or xmiting on those freqs, just have a shitty range because it's so weak, even with the longer antenna

The last run started at 6:30pm and it wasn't bad because of the recent rains. The run before was hotter, I remember seeing that it was 101 at midnight. It's hot but not unbearable, just bring lots of water and turn the A/C on.

I'm showing thunder storms Wed-Tues as well. Never been to this place, but I imagine it'll be nice and wet (and cooler than average)

News says that we'll have a chance of rain Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning. But it won't be as nearly as much rain as two weeks ago.

We do night runs during the summer to avoid some of the heat. It's still hot but cools off a bit

    You really should mod it.

Two things need to happen in order to use the 281 on the race radio freq's that we use.

    1) Remove the resistor. Here is a video on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62meHp2N2AM
I used a cheap solder iron and tweezers to pull mine.

    2) You will need an antenna that has been tuned to the frequency you want to use. This is true of all the frequencies you'll want to use. 151-154 I believe is the race radio frequency bands. Buy a 2 meter antenna, there should be instructions on how to "tune" it. Its as simple as cutting off 2 inches or so.

You can still use the radio for the 144-148 (2 meter) HAM frequencys but you will need another antenna. No turning will be needed for that one.

The Baofeng wont need any mods. Its a good radio to have on you while walking around.

If you want help doing it let me know.
