How long between oil changes? Is Amsoil good oil to use?

I plan on running Amsoil Signature 0w-20 full synthetic in my 4WD 2.7l. I never go off-road or treat the truck hard, in fact, I have never had her over 3000 RPMs.

My daily commute is about 30 miles round trip, half of it on 55 MPH country roads, and the other half on the freeway (65-70 MPH).

But I own another car, and 2 motorcycles, so my Taco will prolly accumulate less than 10k miles a year.

Amsoil claims their life for their signature series to be 25k miles, but most certainly would not go that long.

How long do you full-synthetic guys go between oil changes? And I presume Amsoil is good stuff?

    Thanks!

I run Mobil 1 full synthetic and change every 5k miles w/filter but I'm supercharged. You should be able to get 10k with that setup. On all my forced induction engines I change every 5k and on all my naturally aspirated engines I change every 10k. I check all of them at every fuel fill up for color & level and I highly suggest getting into that habit if you don't already. You're more likely to experience a catastrophic engine failure due to level than you are quality so making sure you have an idea of the level and rough estimate on quality every few hundred miles is the least we should all be doing. Having said all of that, I advise sending some oil at various intervals off for analysis to see when your truck needs the oil changed to be safe. Bob is the Oil Guy is a great resource as well.

I would NEVER run any oil that does not meet API specs...does your AMSOIL?

I have nothing against Amsoil products.

However, I do believe, based on years of personal experience that your truck/car/whatever will last just as long using non-boutique products that are readily available at Walmart.

Pick a color, any color, as long as the specs match what's in your owners manual.

I run amsoil in my truck and have about 100,000kms since I changed over. Everything is good so far. But read the box the oil comes in, the 25000 guaranty is for normal service this is from the site, and the oil I use.

Normal Service – Up to 25,000 miles, 700 hours of operation or one year, whichever comes first, in personal vehicles not operating under Severe Service

    • Severe Service – Up to 15,000 miles, 700 hours of operation or one year, whichever comes first.
Severe Service: Primarily short trips (less than 10 miles [16 km]); turbo/supercharged engines; commercial or fleet vehicles; excessive idling; first-time use of AMSOIL motor oil in a vehicle with more than 100,000 miles; frequent towing, hauling, plowing or driving in dusty conditions.

    • Modified engines (non-stock) and those using E85 fuel are excluded from extended drain recommendations.
    • Change at the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended drain interval outside U.S. and Canada.
    • AMSOIL Ea® Full-Flow Oil Filters are designed for extended change intervals. With other brands, do not exceed six months or 10,000 miles unless longer intervals are recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
    • Check oil regularly to maintain proper fill levels.

I have always changed mine at 8000kms and only recently found that ethanol part.

I use Mobil 1 Full Synthetic as well, and also like Ostrichsak, I change the oil and filter every 5k miles. That's what Toyota recommends, and I know that full synthetic oils can go longer than that, but I plan on keeping my Tacoma till at LEAST the 300,000 mile mark.

As far as Amsoil goes, it's been around long enough (in my opinion) to have proven it's not crap. What's important is to change your oil regularly, with a good filter and decent oil. That's what really counts.

Mobil 1 at Walmart $25 for a 5 quart jug, but you still have to buy another quart because you need 5.5 quarts.5,000 mile oil changes.

Been using Mobile 1 since new in 2007. I change the oil @ 10,000 miles with a new filter at 5,000. 152,000 trouble free miles so far and I fully expect to double that.

Agreed. Walmart or Sams always have around $30 sometimes on sale for $23 in my area.

Autozone or Napa don't carry in my town.

Everywhere else sells it for $40 jug

Where I live for that price I could get Royal Purple for my truck....I just don't do that because I can't financially support a $50 oil change every 5,000 miles (I drive alot)

Personally, I am not that particular on brand. As long as it meets specs (weight and API) it seems ok to me. I buy the 5 gal jug at wally world of whatever brand is cheaper. About 6 months ago they had Penzoil full synthetic for $ 22 with a $ 10 rebate. So for $ 12 I got a name brand synthetic. I have not seen the rebate again, but keep looking.

5K miles. Always. Very few factors influence that. If anything you want to change it more if you drive it less, but don't consider changing it less often. Not worth the risk. Oil changes are cheap and arguably the most important maintinence.

I also agree with nit necessarily feeling the need to go with expensive oil. What is most important is that it is regularly changed.

Apparently 5k is the new 3k oil change rule?

With the better built engines and high quality oils in production today, 10k is an easy number (under normal driving conditions) for a healthy motor.

Send a sample of your oil, from your engine, and have it tested. Or just keep believing the old tales.

OP. Nothing really wrong with Amsoil. It's a regular base with a unique boutique additive package. And a more-expensive-than-it-should-be marketing plan. Mobil 1 and a couple of other OTC oils are just fine, easier to find and available at sale prices.
