Found this clip on you-tube of a 1920 Dodge car driving on rural roads of the day compared to a modern dodge 4X4 pickup. Pretty amazing what a 2wd car could do. Be sure to watch to the end.

Narrow, tall tires and my guess is they were not soft like the new tires that can "float" on slippery surfaces rather than sink down.
