Sweet jesus that's a lot of money for that.

You can import the 90's diesel Hilux up here for under $10K and Land Cruisers in the $15K area.

I may be WAY off here...but my initial thoughts on the buy out that happened are that the tax payers basically covered it. I know people state that GM has paid it back, but the reports I've seen show that they basically dumped it onto GM Finance to show it being paid back, and are still working on about 40% of the money borrowed. This means that I am basically buying a GM product through my taxes. So I honestly cant come to grips with paying them even more....

Like I said, that's just how I see it.

Yep, today's trucks are the station wagons on yore. They have become more of a people hauler than anything, at least in the private consumer market.

    You are correct sir.

GM did pay back their loans but the profits don't line up with the repayments, so some of it was definitely financed. I'm not sure if it was through their financing arm or where they got the money.

BTW I still have friends that believe that Ford take the same bailout. Chevy fans die hard.

It would be nice if I could put a 2200 lbs pallet in the back of a station wagon :p. I get what you are saying though. If offroad performance is how you measure trucks, then the trucks aren't all that capable compared to 30 years ago.

For most retails and construction businesses though trucks now a days are the bee's knee's, so to speak.

Ford DID in fact accept some monies, but not for epic failure reasons. Ford stated that GM would have an upper hand if they didn't accept SOME money. It was MUCH MUCH less and was spent on retooling and such. But their stance was that they couldn't compete with GM being financed basically.

Yeah, that is buying it through an importer...you can do it yourself for much cheaper. I have a bud that lives overseas, we have casually joked about getting into the import biz.

I have sold and shipped overseas before...the process isn't "too" horrible. Rust free air cooled VW's and American classics are pretty hot in Europe right now.

I agree with you...out of shear principle...don't think I can do it...that and GM products are a slight step above Daaadge. ;)

Though, every single one of us that drives...the fuel we use is subsidized by the government, not the mention the shear cost of money and lost lives securing those resources.

Every time a fella here at work pulls in with a new GM truck I give them so much shit. Their first response is that it was cheaper than a Ford. Then I start breaking down the processes of the bail out and the aftermath and question them on where the gubment got all that money to bail someone out. The look on their faces when they realize that the gubment gets their money from US, is undeniable. So then I tell them that they are basically paying double for that vehicle and they silently slit their own throat.

yeah, if I didn't play in the dirt as much as I do, I most likely wouldn't own a truck. Though we have kicked around the idea of getting a Suby as our 3rd vehicle...but even then...not sure that will work...there are times I need to be rescued. :) Because as of now my 2nd vehicle, even though it is a SUV, but it it is only RWD...I can't get it in where I can get my Tacoma in.

We will probably get another Tacoma or a 4Runner.

    Nice!

Though, if I am going to through trouble of importing something...it would have to be a LC70. Then I think...a Tacoma will do everything I want it to do...why go through the trouble of importing? I have exported...while it wasn't too bad...it was still a pain in the ass. The stress alone of thinking if the overseas buyer is going to stiff ya...makes me think twice of doing it again.

Yes, and Ford actually repaid the loan in full ahead of schedule and there profit/quarterly statements supported their ability to do so.

In Canada our Government owned 8% of GM for years, and then GM went ahead and shut down capacity at their plant. Ford received no buy in, and has expanded the Windsor engine plant and the Markham assembly plant. Pardon my language, but fuck GM.

Everyone tries to spell mine like yours.

I'm not a big GM fan either, but comparing full size trucks, I think it is much better looking than the fords.

I am currently over a barrel on what to do. I have a family of 4 with a 2.5 yr old and a .5 yr old.

    Currently the stable consists of:
    2001 4runner Sport 4x4
    2001 Toyota Tacoma TRD OR
    2007 Honda Accord.

I purchased the Accord for mileage and to keep it off my Taco. The 4runner is proving to be quite a bit smaller than it seemed, and under powered. (I'm 6'3"/220 lbs and the wife is 5'10"/160lbs). With car seats and any luggage we have to resort to borrowing a clam shell thingy to mount to the top (ghey) which is a complete pain in the ass. I'm the only person who drives the Taco, and it basically sits in the show barn.

So, I have been on a mission to find an F-150 Super Crew, 4x4 that is in the budget, ($25-30k) that doesn't have a bunch miles on it. Its damn near impossible. I've kicked around the idea of an older landcruiser or Sequoia but have been unable to find one as well.

So, we are just rocking out what we have, because, well....the Taco and the 4runner are paid off. The Accord has about $6k left on it...
