Recently I bought a portable grill for cooking on the beach. The grill uses the 1lb propane canisters, but they run out a fairly quick.

Has anyone tried refilling the portable tanks from a 20lb tank?

Helpful hint when refilling from 20# tank. 1st put Disposable cylinder in freezer for a few minutes and turn 20# upside down so you are drawing liquid not jus vapor.

We have 2 five pound tanks we use for camping trips. Then the 20lb tank for longer trips

When camping with my trailer in days of yore (not a camper, just an open cargo trailer) I'd carry the 20 on the front. Found a hose/adapter that let me run my Coleman stove right off the 20. None of that little bottle futzing around.

Certain conditions would show the small ones better I suppose, but I've never really found the need. Even cooking crabs as caught on the beach, we just made up the boil on the tailgate of the truck with the 20 in the bed........... ummmm, fresh crab......

Sounds good in theory, but that's like putting all your eggs in one basket.

Went on a camping trip with a former girlfriend long ago, doing just what you recommended, having a 20lb cylinder with the adapter to run items made for the smaller cylinders. All went well, until she forgot to shut off the big tank and had let the propane run out.

At least if one small cylinder fails you, you have the others to rely on.

I have one of the 15-20' hoses with adapter to the stove. I have found that I end up wasting quite a bit of propane using it because I fully disconnect everything after each time I cook to pack up and drive. The fuel stays in the hose until I disconnect it and then leaks out when everything has been disconnected.

I bought the adapter to refill the small canisters and tried with basement temperature tank and small container with a low 20lb tank. It didn't work well.

I need to try again with a tank that has more pressure and put the small canister in the freezer first. Another tip I read was to set the tank out in the sun to warn that up to increase the pressure.

@JasonLee Leave the 20lb tank in the sun?

When you disconnect the hose it might smell like you are losing a lot of propane but the hose only contains vapor not liquid so the actual loss is very, very low. and when refilling disposable cylinders cool the empty in the freezer and warm the 20# in the sun and be sure to turn the 20# upside down before you open valve so you are drawing liquid not just vapor.

And if you could 'capture' that and light it off in your stove, I bet it wouldn't last 10 seconds.

It's not nearly the quantity you are thinking it is.

i lug around a big 20lb tanks. $15 adaptor hose and it's on! if i have my truck nearby, i prefer the big tanks. if anything, it is less crap in the landfills. i've honestly never tried refilling the green bottles. i have several for earthquake emergency lighting, but i never use them.
