In 2005, the V-6 with automatic has 100,000 miles synthetic tranny fluid, and that is when it is recommended to change. Crazy not to, unless you want to see if a Toyota will actual fail??? My 2001 V-6 had 60,000 mile tranny fluid. Both my trucks were flushed and changed at those mileages. My 2010 automatic is only at 78,000 miles. At 100,000, it will also get a flush service.

I have got to hear the reasoning behind this thought process.

Not sure why these trannies do not have a standard drain and fill amount. Figuring that there is the proper amount in it to start with why can't you just refill with same amount that you take out?

    Peru:

I drain and refill the Avalon every 25K. That transmission holds 7 qts. - 3.7 qts. are drained, so I get a hair over half of it out. Avalon uses WS fluid. My 1st Gen Tacoma 2.4 liter also held 7 qts. but would only drain 2.5 qts and that was with the front of the truck elevated. I changed the Dexron-III in that truck every other oil change.

It will be interesting to see how much drains from my 2015 when I do its first drain at 25K. I see reports ranging from 2 qts. to 3.2 qts.

I am not suggesting anyone do this, but to date I have switched out the Toyota WS in an '07 Camry and my '06 Avalon with the Valvoline WS equivalent. Both cars shift as smooth or smoother than before. Costs about a 1/3 of what the local dealers charge for Toyota WS.

The reality is simply that most of us could go indefinitely w/o changing transmission fluid. I do it because I'm old school and I enjoy tinkering with my cars.

    Every 30K.
You won't have to worry about sludge, burnt fluid, because it's not a flush.
It's easy to do it yourself to save $.

I've used Valvoline fluid in a variety of applications that weren't "certified" but stated by Valvoline as "recommended." It's good stuff. And, I use Valvoline CVT fluid in my Mitsubishi, and, as far as I'm concerned, it performs better better than the factory fluid. And, these are vehicles that have over 150k on the transmissions with no problems. That being said, I would be just as concerned about changing the filter screen as I would be about doing a drain/fill. I believe my I4 Tacoma four speed auto has a filter/screen, and I'll bet the v6 5 speed does too.

does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.
Tons of misinformation in this thread. Transmission fluid IS NOT OIL! It is hydraulic fluid, meant to withstand pressure, it also has detergents to keep the internals clean. It does NOT lose its ability to handle pressure unless contaminated with water. The filter is supposed to catch all the particles that the fluid picks up, that's what needs to be periodically changed, the fluid should never need to be changed unless its contaminated. I have multiple tractors and heavy equipment, and we never change hydraulic fluid unless it has been contaminated by water.

Is it ok to mix tranny fluid? I have toyota ws in the tranny at the moment. Would like to start using vavoline max life. Will it be ok for me to drain and fill?

Because they are "sealed" to go 100,000 miles between service/ changing.

ATF is a type of oil and it is most definitely a petroleum product. Excessive heat can break the fluid down and shorten transmission life.

These have sealed transmissions. I have over 165K on my 2009 TRD Sport. At 100K I had to call and BEG dealerships to change the fluid. One did change it for me but it was like pulling teeth.

BOCH Toyota SOUTH did it. BOCH Norwood tried to talk me out of doing it.

My reply to each of them that balked was.... "did automotive engineers invent a new lubrication fluid that Im not aware of?

New tranny fluid must be put in at temp. while having truck attached to computer, etc...

I think I paid close to 350 bucks? Peace of mind was what I was after and I got it.

Yes, hydraulic fluid is petroleum based, just like oil, and Diesel is petroleum based like gasoline, but are any of these the interchangeable? No they are different products for different uses. Yes, hydraulic fluid lubricates, but that is not its primary job.
I don't need a lesson in hydraulics, I've actually read quite a bit about it, and I've had a ton of real world "on the job" training.
YES, heat will break down hydraulic fluid, but, we have a tranny fluid cooler and a idiot light to prevent this. If YOU have overheated YOUR tranny, then sure it needs replacing, but that is highly unlikely unless you tow quite a bit.

Yes, it is relatively inexpensive to do it as a preventative for this truck, 12 quarts at $10, pretty cheap insurance, but it is unnecessary unless fluid is contaminated. I have equipment with 25 gallon tanks for hydraulic fluid, @$100 per 5 gallon, $500 to change out a fluid that is unnecessary would be stupid and financially burdensome.

    Justin, what is so ironic?

If anyone would like to research it more for themselves I recommend Brendan Casey's website, http://www.hydraulicsupermarket.com/books.html .
