CRV's are a good buy in general. Just be aware the AWD can require extra maintenance or replacements.

IMHO Civics have always been pretty fugly. Functional and some are fun, but fugly.

This is what I want as a commuter, but it's definitely not in the financial plans and not family friendly:

I like the way these look! The 2011 and 2013 Mazda 3 got perfect ratings on Consumer Reports. I know @Sterdog said a friend of his had one and had a ton of problems. Anyone else know someone that's driven one of these, and whether they liked it or not? They don't look a ton different from the Civics and Corollas, but still, I just like the way they look better. Never had a Mazda, never even considered one. Whaddya guys think?

They are also built for short people. Sit in one on the passenger side. If you or hubby are taller than 5'8" your head will hit the ceiling on even the non sunroof model.

Meh. It just has really aggressive lines. In person the grill looks like ass IMHO and the interior is 3rd world style until you hit the higher end models.

When I last walked into a Mazda dealer all they wanter to show us was the CR magazine. They knew once we got in the car we wouldn't want one. The sales guy even tried to get me to stay at the dealer so my wife, gf at the time, wouldn't notice I couldn't fit in the car lol. No offence, but f Mazda lol.

I thought you wanted reliable with good mileage? Mazda will be in the shop. My wifes parents are still big Mazda people because they are family friends with the dealership owner. Her moms 6 is one year old and it's a POS. Flakey radio and she's not happy with the feel of the seats. The performance is definitely good. The sad thing is that she won't even try a Ford, even though she can get a Taurus for how much she spent on the Mazda, because she's afraid of offending her friends. She's thinking about ordering another 6 that will hopefully be better

I do want reliable with good mileage. But you gotta consider that while I am all ears to hear all about people's personal experiences with particular types of cars, I am also taking into account what Consumer Reports said, and taking all of it with a grain of salt. So going by CR, the 2011 and 2013 are super awesome and reliable! And I just happen to like their looks better than Civs and Corollas. But because of my personal experiences and resulting "brand loyalty", I doubt that I'd ever actually try one of these anyway. Just sucks to not be even a little bit excited about the look of something you will pay on monthly for a long time.

Ha!! I'm searching Hyundais now. The 2012 Elantra looks EXACTLY like the 2012 Civic! Great, they all look like pancakes these days.

If you like the agressive look, what about a scion? The Tc is basically a Corolla on steroids.

Sorry I'm so opinionated lol. I just tell people exactly how I feel about things and the why in hopes to save them the learning.

No worries, you caught me on a good day, so I am totally unphased by your constant criticism of what I like. :D

if your looking in that price range then look at these: http://www.cars.com/profile/saved-cars/

but be aware, you pay twice or more the interest rate on used cars at half the loan amounts so the loan on cars like these will be higher monthly notes then on a new car. new cars often have 0.9 or 1.9% interest rates in financing so its nearly free financing on them.

I used to be one to always buy used but in 98 I bought new chevy Silverado and I never had a problem once or even think about it having a problem except when the battery died after 8 years. it was still running and driving like brand new when I got rid of it last year only because the dash board cracked from sitting out in the sun all the time. if you want a car to keep forever and you plan to take care of it then new is the way to go.

if you like fixing cars and don't mind it having some issue or the other at least twice a year for as long as you own it then used is a good option. buy new and never have to fix it, buy used and you will have to fix it regularly. if you are going to be paying the monthly note of a new car then you may as well get a new car. that new car wont be a used car like you are used to in ten years, it will still look and feel new and you will be so happy you made the right choice to buy new.

not sure, but maybe I mentioned this before
