I read somewhere that when you are in neutral the rpms stay up... I don't get this though, if it's a manual and in neutral shouldn't the rpms be down around 1,000 so it's just idling?

Why? So it revs up to like 3k when in neutral?

It keeps the revs up for a fraction of a second between shifts to keep incompletely combusted gasses out of the exhaust.

My 07 used to do what OP is talking about... never understood it, usually when coasting down a hill it would Rev to 1.5-2k. Mine might have been a pedal problem or something, I could usually get it go idle normally if I tapped the gas, does that work with yours OP?

^^Well, I actually don't have a tacoma... yet! But I've always driven manuals and like to coast in neutral down hills to maximize mpgs. So I just want to make that will work when I get a tacoma. I love shifting, coasting in neutral, skipping gears downhill etc.

^^ Hmm... is this just on the tacoma or manuals in general? I have a honda 5-speed and when coasting in neutral the rpms go down to 1k... which I would think uses less gas then leaving it in gear... but maybe not then...

I have a manual transmission too and the revs do stay high in between shifts for a brief moment. I always wondered why it did that. Thought it was my driving.

The time that the revs stay up is so small its barely worth talking about. IF you're going on a long downhill and pop it into neutral, you're at idle in a flippin' second. Totally a non-issue.

As said, you're better off leaving it in gear.

I hated the rpm hang between shifts on my 07. Had to completely adjust the way I shifted and drove for it. I owned the truck about eight years and never liked that aspect of it.

    Totally honest question here....

    WHY?

I'm on my 3rd 06-08 manual. You're driving... you clutch & let off throttle a bit, you move the shifter, you get back on throttle & unclutch. You're done shifting.

What's there to adjust about this? Every manual I've had going back to the 53 Chevy followed the same basic pattern. (The Deeres' and some early IHs needed double-clutching, but that a different argument)
