I have a 2013 Taco...what code reader do you recommend?

It communicates with your smart phone via Bluetooth. You can get it for Android or Iphone. Not only can you read and clear codes including ABS and SRS (not all readers can do this), but you can monitor real time data on just about every sensor and data point available through the OBD2. Awesome tool!

 

Your phone is the best code reader. I use Torque with a Blue Tooth dongle from China. Cost me 6 dollars for the dongle and 2 dollars for Torque. Torque will also clear codes if you know the sequence for some of them

 

For over 10 years I've used cheap units, and then researched everything on the web after pulling the codes. Sometimes the scanners were incompatible with some cars. Then I bought a high quality Bosch.

I will never go back.

Not only will it do about everything, it will list the actual fix (not just code) in order of likeliness from a vehicle specific ASE certified tech database, and locate the faulty part on the vehicle for you. And it gets updates. Doesn't get easier short of paying a mechanic.

Find a used SnapOn MT2500, and try to find one with the case and multiple cartridges. It will have factory features like solenoid and relay actuations. As well as ABS and transmission tools. I got lucky and for $400 got on with BMW, Audi/VW, Nissan/Toyota/Honda, GM/Ford/Chrysler cartridges along with all the cables for OBD1. Its an old scanner, but can do more than any of the $100 handhelds can do.
