...sorry if this is obvious to everyone else, but looking through the owners manual of my 2005 PreRunner SR5 has not shed any light on this at least that I can understand.
I believe I have 'running lights' on this truck, but when driving in daylight the only light I can see is the instrument panel. (Kind of weird 'cause I never needed them before on my Highlander). When I switch the lights to the first position, I get 'parking lights', whatever that means, (also get two running board lights on each side). When I switch to position 2, the headlights come on. I also have a switch for what I'd consider the two 'fog lights', but it only works when the headlights are on? Is this they way its supposed to work or is there some kind of short going on here? Thanks for any help someone with an '05 can provide.

The fogs are designed to only turn on when your lights are on, but there's a quick workaround for that on here. Other than that, you're ok. Rock Lobster is correct, you don't have DTRLs.

Foglight's only work when your low beams are on.
Headlights are only on when your switch is in the 2nd position.
parking lights in the 1st position turn your tail lights on so that people can see you from behind even when you're not braking

there is no indicator for DRL's. Start the truck, make sure your headlights and parking brake are off, go look at the front and see if you have them.

    Clazzio seat covers,
You can buy a jumper to "install" DRLs on your '05 ... I did this on my '06 & '10 ... the part number escapes me at the moment but it is possible.

Too bad the fogs can't be turned on w/o the headlights. I'd love to do the mod, but not very handy, especially when it comes to automotive electrical.

There's good write ups for this. If you can change a light bulb, I have faith that you can successfully perform the fogs anytime surgery.

Thanks for the help, guys. I may see about getting a few crimps and checking this out. Still looks a bit more complicated than screwing in a light bulb, but I just might give it a shot, since I think its silly not to have fog lights that can be controlled when I want them on, and not just when headlights are on. Poor engineering, I think.

    There are actually practical reasons.

If you need fogs on due to actual fog, you need low beams/tails on as well.

Since your vision is reduced with high beams in fog, you shouldn't need fog light with high beams on, since you are not in fog.

Fogs make lousy driving lights. If you need more visibility, there are tons of great driving light choices out there.

I'm not saying don't alter their control. Just why they are what they are.

However, the best fogs are yellow. Its a shame Toyota (and others) dont get that right either.

Alright maybe I exaggerated a little bit, but if you have any questions you always have TW as a resource anyway, what could go wrong?

I agree that yellow fogs are probably more effective. I just have a problem with not being able to turn the fog lights on independently, when I want to. It brings to mind the way the govnm't forced the issue of 'safer' gas cans, or why the heck I can only make 2 copies of my Tacoma key for 'security'. It doesn't inconvenience the auto thieves much, just the owners.
Oh, I like using the fogs during light rain, even without any fog.

I like using them just to roll up on some hoodlums and scare them out of my neighborhood.
