I watched a video recently (can't find it now) on some cylinder head service on a 4 cylinder 1st gen Taco. He mentions that the plastic OEM timing chain guides were the cause of a lot of problems as they used to break a lot on that model, especially around the bolt hole and suggests to replace them with some metal aftermarket ones that are more solid.

Mine is a 2nd gen V6 and I have the thing open for rebuild. I was looking at my guides and they are plastic, just like the ones in the video but they look alright. The truck has 120K mi. Has Toyota improved the OEM plastic guides since or are they still a problem that should preferably be replaced with metal ones now that I have access? I imagine they don't cost much.
