I love driving a manual but I have an 18' camping trailer. Do you tow with a manual? I'd love to hear your thoughts on getting the manual or staying safe and getting the auto.

I'd go manual, but I like them. I tow a zero turn, 1500lbs total every other week with a 4 banger. I can do 75 easily. My dad has a 5.9 Cummins 6spd, its better than my uncles 5.9 auto.

This camping trailer is 2650 lbs and probably close to 3000 lbs loaded up.

Manual FTW, it'll handle the heat better and will turn you into a better driver.

Lots of backing up involved in having a large trailer. Typically, on a stick, backing up involves lightly slipping the clutch in order to go slow enough - at least if does if you're me. And frequent clutch slipping isn't conducive to long clutch wear. Also, for getting the thing moving, the auto has torque converter "torque multiplier" when getting moving, and that's an advantage. So as long as you've got a tranny cooler (which comes with the towing package) going with the automatic is a good safe practice if you'll be towing.

But, before long, someone will weigh in on this thread with how he tows heavy with his six speed and wouldn't have it any other way. So, diffrn't strokes.

All that said - I drive a stick. But, I don't pull a travel trailer.

I'm guessing it's heavier than that loaded up - trailer mfr are notorious for publishing light numbers, and you probably load it with more stuff than you think.

But still, even at the 3500/4000 - that's a lot less than the full 6500 the Tacoma's capable of. So get the transmission option you prefer, don't worry about it, and be happy.

Do the TRD sport models come with a tow package or is that an additional item? Is a trailer brake controller part of that package?

Tow package is a separate package, TRD's usually have them because they're not base models.

I don't think so, If it is it's integrated and not adjustable, the tow package includes a hitch (Class IV if memory serves), aux. trans cooler (On auto trans models), 7 pin plug, and a higher output alternator.
