2 weeks ago it dropped to $2.17 here, with a promise of "under $2 by fall". I watch crude oil futures and see they're hovering around $42 a barrel. So the under $2 claim looked accurate. According to a number of sources, gasoline supplies are at near capacity. Sounds great!

Then, supposedly an oil refinery in Northern Indiana has an emergency shut down for unscheduled maintenance. In less than 24 hours, our gas goes to $2.99. Funny thing is, the gas we use here doesn't come from up north. It's hauled in by barge from a refinery down south. I can go 25 miles to the south and still get gas for $2.25.

The Louisville area gas stations ALL get their gas through a Marathon Oil distributor. They monopolize trade and control prices at will. Crude futures go up, pump prices go up the very same day. Crude prices drop, it takes weeks, sometimes even MONTHS before we see relief at the pump.

Rant rant rant, rant rant rant........

$2.31 for 87 octane in Athens, Ga. With .10 cents off Kroger discount. I can't figure out why gas is always .28-.45 cents more here than the rest of the state. We have a liquid and natural gas pipeline, a refinery and fuel depot in town. It's not like we're in some remote BFA. I think they charge more because all the students from the metro ATL. Have their bills covered by their parents. Seems far father but the local economy counts on the money of student's parents.
