Hello everyone. I am new to this.i have a 98 Tacoma and when I am driving up a hill my check engine light flashes and truck starts to shake. Doesnt downshift to a passing gear either. When I level out and turn off the cruise control it stops and runs fine. any ideas on what it could be? I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

You've already solved your problem. Don't use CC on a hilly road.

Do you have this problem when you go uphill without the cruise control being on?

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
That doesn't help the OP much. CC isn't supposed to trigger the check engine light going up hills. While I agree turning it off on hilly terrain is a good idea (the transmission will thank you, and your wallet) this isn't what is causing his issue.
