Coming from a ZJ, a WJ and a 4door wrangler I can say I was really happy to get into a Tacoma. You can't put a price on the piece of mind you get from having a reliable vehicle. I have to admit that I do get jealous when I see a wrangler rolling around with the top and doors off but I love having the versatility you get with having a truck bed. I've never had to worry if my camping gear would fit and still have room in the back seat with my Tacoma. Good luck on your quest!

Best sales pitch ever. The ability to remove the top and doors doesnt appeal to me really. I like the wrangler and have wheeled a few of my friends while they drove mine but once I put the kids in there goes all of my room for something big if I'm out and about. Thats what kinda swayed me toward a toyota because I still have room for whatever I need in the back and dont have to make a second trip. Gonna be a scramble once the new ones hit the lot if I want one or to try and find a 15 off road still on a lot somwheres.

Quoted for so much truth. I won't be running a Taco offroad anytime soon and if I do it's only because it's another rig and not my actual DD.

I have always ran (for the last 5 years at least) a dedicated trail rig and if you have the means to do so I highly recommend it.

Man, I find myself going back and forth on the same dilemma I have owned both and enjoyed both. I currently have a DCSB Tacoma TRD Sport. The Tacoma is without a doubt the better ride and more practical for me.

However, I enjoyed the piss out of the TJ Wrangler. It's simply a fun vehicle. Currently, not having children and it being the two of us I find myself contemplating buying a 2 door Wrangler Unlimited (LJ) and a trailer. Did you make your decision yet?

I'd sell my child for an LJ Rubicon.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
If you want something for tight trail riding, find a first gen double cab. A true compact truck. The second gen is only a few inches short of being a full size so you will run into the same problems you have with your Grand Cherokee off road, lots of scratches and scuffs to your truck. This is my 04 DC, and even stock I've taken it down trails I would have never taken my previous second gen on without scratching the hell out of it. It's entirely up to you, but in my opinion, the smaller first gen makes a better trail machine simply because it's more compact and can fit places bigger rigs cannot. Don't let the size fool you, double cabs are roomy inside and you'd be amazed all the crap you can stack in that little bed if you get creative! Also, the '16 looks even bigger than the 2nd gen so I would definitely avoid those for technical trail riding too.
