Nothing new, all of Toyota's D4D engines have this. The "self cleaning" is simply the engine switching between direct and port injection depending on what's optimal? As a side affect by going into the port injection system it helps clean some of the excess carbon build up left by the direct injection?

Yeah the port injection is using fuel to help clean the top side of valves from carbon buildup and the fuel entering the cylinder from intake would help clean the direct injectors from carbon buildup. Direct injected engines alone doesn't have this option available.

Did anyone else notice the fact that the TRD OR has a different class braking system than the TRD Sport??

Also, e-Locker in the back for all TRDs!

Notice that he mentions that its during idle which would be when port injection is being used. The interesting thing is that he mentioned that you'd hear a small 'ticking' noise for a few seconds while this is happening from time to time. The ticking noise is a sign of the pressured direct injectors being opened which makes me believe that they're simply allowing air to pass through the direct injectors at the same time during port injection to help blow off carbon buildup.

You're right. TRD OR has a different braking system because of the crawl control.

that video is terrible. it's already been mentioned that he is wrong.

The OR gets a boosted brake system for more low speed brake power. Only the OR gets the rear locker

Also, why does everyone keep saying D4D? That is the diesel code

LOL sorry, wishful thinking of my part... I secretly want the D4D in a Tacoma. I love my 2015 Taco... with that being said I would trade her in less than a minute and put up with the upgly Gen 3 grill if it were available in a D4D connected to a 6MT - 4x4. Yes it should read the D4S system in the 3.5 petrol V-6 Tacoma is not new to Toyota.

All the paperwork from Toyota says he is wrong about the locker on the Sport.

Actually no air passes through the direct injectors, since they are under high fuel pressure at all times. Air within that system means there might be a vacuum lock somewhere along the fuel system, which is not a good thing.

I think what you meant to say was that the fuel-air mixture coming from the port injection helps clean and lubricate the rod-side of the intake valves, effectively minimizing carbon-deposits that would otherwise build up on those intake valve surfaces that direct-injection-only engines experience all the time because only the combustion chambers get exposed to fuel but not the intake valves' rod-side, thus accelerating carbon-buildup process mostly due to nasty EGR or PCV byproducts.

Two reasons why I got rid of my BRZ. 1. 2nd gear tranny issue...known factory design flaw 2. Is the direct injection system by Toyota for Subaru. There's a gasket around the direct injector that when gets hot can leak and then eventually causes engine failure. I never understood why the DI fuel systems was a high pressure threaded screw on injector instead of a dumb gasket to hold the injectors in place. I also wouldn't be surprised if the 2016 Tacoma will have the cricket problem with the fuel pump.

I really like a lot of the features of the 2016 model, but I wish they had a turbo 4 cylinder like the ecoboost mustang and offered as regular cab...but that will never happen the regular cab part.
