So does this mean this particular bear had attacked/eaten a human before?
...or she was just a hungry bear that this man unfortunately ran into?
If she wasn't necessarily defending her cubs it seems unlikely that she would exhibit this behavior
unless she had done this before?? Especially the cached bit for later feeding?

I'm not that well versed on Grizzly behavior, just seems a bit odd.

Sad either way, especially for the cubs that were otherwise happily wild.

Hard to say really. If the berry crop and other food sources were not plentiful this year its possible that she was desperate and saw a lone hiker as an easy target for her and her two cubs. Like the article said, a defensive attack does not result in the bear eating the victim. No other attacks or missing persons have been reported and the bear responsible not ID'd so I'd say that she never attacked a human before.
I took part in a bear aware class taught by a biologist who has spent his career studying bears - blacks and grizzlies. His general theory is that a grizzly sees humans only as a threat to their cubs and/or their food source. If a grizzly attacks its basically telling you that it doesn't want you in the area. That's why your response to a grizzly should be to stay calm and try to back away slowly without further upsetting the bear. Black bears on the other hand sometimes see humans as food, not competition for their food. Black bears have been known to attack humans without being provoked and are generally more aggressive. A good response to a black bear is to stand your ground, be as loud as you can be and look as big and scary as you can and hope that the bear decides you're tougher than it is and not worth the fight. That's why its so important to know how to correctly identify the two species - having the wrong reaction to the bear could actually make the encounter more dangerous.

Interesting info on the bear class....thanks.

We only have the Blacks in NC and they are more used to seeing people.

The only encounter i've had while hiking was just a quick glance and i started to yell
and jump around and it ran away really quick...it saw me before i saw it so it was already
heading the other way. Before, when i would hike or go birding i normally would try to be very
quiet so i could see and hear other things better without disturbing them...

but after the encounter i make more noise now and unfortunately take less photos...
especially when hiking in areas i'm not that familiar with.

As long as he stays in the park he's safe.
Yup, that was a little sparrow hanging out and catching bugs

Went down to Grand Teton this weekend. The smoke was horrible (thanks a lot Idaho wildfires!) and the mountains were pretty much not visible but my mooses were still around! At least I had something to photograph!
A few quick edits (gotta remember the magic PS process to get rid of the smoky haze....) I introduce you to my three moose-keteers!

Best buddies....some lady that was there watching them with me was talking about "oh, they're going to spar!" I told her "No, they're not. They're buddies!" They just wandered right below me (I was up on an embankment about 30 feet or so above the river) and into the willows. Saw them later that evening and the one on the left was standing guard as the older guy on the right was taking a nap.

Pretty sure the third guy, the one in the right of the last photo, is the one that never ventures too close to the people. He tends to hang back a bit while the other two pose for all of the crazy tourists and myself. This is the first time I've ever gotten more than just a shot of his head!

Also met a couple from Italy this weekend as I was watching the moose. They had NEVER seen a moose before and were so excited that they got to see these guys. I let them borrow my binoculars for a minute to get a closer look. Their reaction was priceless....the #2 highlight of my trip. #1 being that I actually got a good shot of the last guy...been watching them for 5 years now! I know a little Italian but I have no idea what they were chattering about once I pointed out the two bulls hiding in the willows. Kinda hope they go back home and tell everyone about the girl they met in the park and how she told them about all of the good moose spotting areas. Good to be reminded every so often that not all tourists are a PITA :D

Nice moose photos & thanks for being an outstanding ambassador for the parks - both local and international. You know those Italians are going home to spread the word.

Great thread! Not sure how I am just now stumbling upon it. I visited Yellowstone and the Tetons for the first time this summer and I am dying to go back. Such an incredible and inspiring place! Hoping to find a job in the next year somewhere in WY, CO, MT or ID.

Nice moose pics! You can find a bunch of haze removal stuff on youtube. Also, there are supposed to be some great haze removal tools in the latest version of Light Room.

 Its not freakin' SeaWorld people!!! Would you like them to wear tutu's and ride unicycles while balancing a ball on their noses as well?!?!?!?

Passed a local car rental place today. Their message board on the sign says "YELLOWSTONE IS NOT A PETTING ZOO!!!" Almost doubled back to get a pic....
