Only got through about a day's worth of photos today. Figured I'd post as I get through them to spread the photos out a bit.

My mom and I were chasing these Tyrannulets all over the place until we got photos of them!

Our first thought was that they were kinglets, they look so similar!

Apparently this little guy isn't very common. Glad he stopped for the brief moment that he did so I could get a photo to ID him!

Just a couple more from the next day's trip up to Quilotoa, a crater lake up at over 12,000 feet elevation. Not too many birds as it's quite the attraction so there were tons of people around, but the Ground-Tyrant was a new one for me! Also saw what was most likely an American Kestrel and a Black-chested Buzzard Eagle, but I accidentally screwed up the camera settings so those photos didn't come out.

There were three or four of these guys running around and flycatching off the trail. Fun to watch!

Got this flowerpiercer on my way back up from the lake:

Galápagos pictures! My family and my girlfriend and her mom went on a cruise through the islands aboard the Eden yacht. It was an excellent cruise and we saw everything we wanted to see, and then some!

Upon arriving, the guide picked us up at the airport and we were basically with him and the group for the rest of the 7 days, minus a few hours while in the town of Puerto Ayora. On the first day we went from Baltra Island (Airport island) to Bachas Beach on Santa Cruz island.
On the way we saw tons of Storm-Petrels (still not sure the exact species), Audubon's Shearwaters (I'm pretty sure), Magnificent Frigatebirds, Blue-footed Boobies, and Black Noddies. I have more photos from our landing on the island itself on my other camera, but I'll go through those tomorrow.

This one's super cropped in, but I thought it was cool that you can see the way they use their webbed feet as ailerons to turn themselves while diving.

The sea turtles use the beaches here for nests, and it seems like there was one hatching a little early and the Frigatebirds were having a feast on the little baby turtles. It was happening maybe 10 feet away from me. Crazy!

Thanks! Still a lot more to come!
Hopefully you can get there soon! Though the cruise was amazing and allows for more time at the farther-out islands, it is much more expensive. You can do the trip cheaper by just going independently to the islands and taking day tours around, but it was so much easier to have everything taken care of by the crew and guide.

On the second day we went up to Isla Genovesa to the North, crossing over the equator. We even got little certificates for the equator-crossing!

In the morning we landed at Darwin Bay Beach and walked along a little trail that went past many nesting Red-footed and Nazca Boobies, nesting Frigatebirds, plenty of Darwin's Finches, a few Yellow Warblers, Swallow-tailed Gulls, and even a Ruddy Turnstone that was turning over rocks in the intertidal zone. Absolutely bustling with activity! And everything was so close, too. I rarely used the 400mm lens here because if I did I'd have to back up constantly.

In the afternoon we went over to the other side of Darwin's Bay for the Prince Phillip's Steps hike. It starts with steep steps up a rocky cliff and then it levels out and you walk along the top, winding through trees filled with Booby nests in and around them. It ends up at an open expanse of lava with hundreds of birds flying every which way overhead. It was exhilarating!

That's a pretty cool comparison! I've got another photo of one of them flying. I'll post it after I finish the current batch. Looks like all that dark brown volcanic land lead to the darker coloration.

Haha, that would be interfering! I've helped save baby turtles that get lost and head towards the city lights instead of the ocean before, but that was combating a non-natural cause of mortality. Literally every beach that we visited in the Galapagos had turtle nests, though, so that's promising.

But the poor, helpless babies! :pout:

Habitat definitely plays a role - up here they tend to hang out in the trees and their coloring blends in with the bark perfectly, your guy blends in with the rocks! Their faces look a little different too - the ones I've seen around here are mostly ivory/buff colored on the face and just a little darker around the eyes

 good shot though. Sounds like a trip of a lifetime!

I saw an owl this last weekend but couldn't ID it. Was heading to camp, just about dark, and this big bird swooped out of the trees and flew across the road in front of me. I stopped and got out and could see it perched in a tree but with the poor lighting and smoky haze in the air I couldn't tell exactly what it was. Big head and a "satellite dish" profile in flight....had to be an owl. Also heard some weird screeching/screaming calls later that night. They were moving around too fast to be a land animal so I figured it was a bird. At first I thought there was a baby deer or elk in trouble - the call sounded like their distress call at first.

Haha, life is hard for baby turtles! I forget the statistic but only like 7% of the eggs end up making it to adulthood. It's probably even less than that. It might've been that only 7-10% make it to the open ocean and then even fewer make it to adulthood.

But here, they're making more to replace those lost to the frigatebirds!
[IMG]Pacific Green Sea Turtles by Kevin Shaw, on Flickr

Thanks! It was a fantastic trip!!

Hmmm...Sounds kinda barn owl-like, but they're pretty distinct and I'm assuming you would've known if it was a barn owl.

Then snorkeled around the pinnacle and went over to Santiago island. Not many birds in the area we visited there, either, because we just took a quick walk on the lava flow.

We did see Galapagos Penguins while snorkeling, though! I'll get those photos up when I go through the gopro footage. I swam with Penguins!! :yay:

Then we motored over to Santa Cruz island, passing by Daphne Major for a quick look. We weren't permitted to land there, but the quick look around was pretty cool.

Tons of Storm-Petrels all over the place! They would do this peculiar thing where they would go down to the water and kinda tap-dance on the surface with their feet. So strange!
