My driver's door lock is working on and off. Key doesn't work remote won't work and inside button won't work. Any ideas? When I hit the button it moves some but won't unlock, same with the key.

Sounds like you might need to open it up and do a cleaning and lube of the linkage.

I don't (yet) own a Tacoma, so take this for what it is.
My friend's got BMW X5 and it seems his lock doesn't function mechanically at all, regardless of what locking method is used (button, key, inside). Instead, it appear it functions exclusively electronically. I haven't a clue how Tacos are designed, but don't rule out an electrical issue.

Open up the switches and clean it out with electrical contact cleaner. Other then that just replace it.

Its nothing like a 1st gen tacoma. Any modern BMW is going to have its lock modules as part of a CAN bus. These are old fashioned circuits.

Well his is a 2002 I believe? So I figured it might be similar due to age.

The door should always be able to lock and unlock with the key.

sounds like a cleaning and lube are in order!!

Do those fancy high end cars have a external power port so one can plug in an external power source when the battery fails ??

Even back up power supplies fail

Can't say. Haven't delved into it much. And we didn't do any in-depth testing. Our diagnosis was based on hearing the electronic actuator engaging and there being a minor delay using any locking method. For all we know, it may work mechanically, but it didn't seem like it.

Are we talking the latch or the actuator? Or both?

My driver door is a bit finnicky with the key. I believe it is from years of wear n tear which has slightly bent the key, so it works better one way than the other. Inside of the lock may need some lube lovin'

Yeah, it's weird. I've had mine since it was new and decided to keep it and put some money into it. So I'm kind of new to the fixing and replacing parts things. I did the headlights and stuff and that was pretty easy. It goes to get a new paint job next week because like all black 1st gen it seems like the paint just doesn't hold up on the hood.

I don't mean to thread jack here, but if any experienced vehicle owners stumble across this thread and wouldn't mind telling me the answer to this question:

With a slightly bent key, what is my best course of action? Should I get it duplicated before it gets more bent? Should I flatten it somehow? I don't want my key to one day stop working and then have to drop an arseload of money..

Bend it back, they're brass with a shiny plateing on them, they bend easily, clamp it in a vise near the bend & bend it back with pliers.

Best solution is to go to a local Toyota dealer with your VIN, pink slip, and photo ID, and they will make you a new key. Your bent key is likely worn down anyway. I think it only cost me about $10 to have one made for me.
