Are 2wd Tacomas as reliable as 4wd's? When you see these 250-300k mileage threads, does that apply to either generally?

    I've never owned a 4WD, so I can't say.

By the way, your question is not dumb.

Theoretically a 2WD should be 'more reliable' simply because there are less components in the drive train to potentially fail.

LOL Although I recall seeing a thread where a guy who's rear diff blew out so he put it in 4WD and used the front wheels to drive home so he could make repairs.

It's all how you maintain the vehicle in my opinion. Prerunner has less parts to fail though.

Not dumb at all, personally I believe 2WD lasts longer than 4WD if for nothing else than a lower number of parts and easier to maintain. My opinion though, not based on any proveable facts lol

Chaz is right it's how it's maintained and yes there are less parts to fail. My opinion is that a 4wd is probably going to be "beaten" and taken offroad and tougher situations that a 2wd would be in. Therefore more wear and tear on the parts. Either way these vehicles are very reliable

A couple years ago, when I was looking for my truck, I saw a second gen 2wd access cab for sale with appx 450k miles on it. The guy drove it as a delivery vehicle. Without the front drivetrain to fail, it should be more reliable than a 4wd Tacoma.

In addition to everyone's answers, it's about how you use it. If you take both offroad and the 2wd has to rev twice as high to keep up, you're putting more wear and tear on it.

Taking it further than less parts to fail, you have a higher payload and towing capacity without the weight of the 4wd components, meaning you are constantly under less load which is why 2WDs get a little better MPGs. If that 200-300 lbs makes a difference in longevity, I don't know.

about the only way i say that the 4wd is "less reliable" is simply the fact that they go more places than the 2wd and can get beat on more because of that.....

that stated, a properly maintained 4wd will go just as long as a 2wd.

It's very simple, if you don't need 4 wheel drive, it doesn't make sense to buy it. Both initial costs and upkeep.

Two things.....As far as "the dumbest question".....That was mine. And the now wife did answer yes.

Second. I've owned (counting current one) 17 different 4wds in the past 43 years. If you take care of them, they are a sound investment. I've been able to recoup much of the original purchase price (relative to NON 4wds) when I go to sell or trade. There is a high demand for good USED 4wds. I don't have facts and figures, just anecdotal info, but I won't buy a 2wd truck any more.
