I've seen crawl control do some impressive stuff in person that 8-10 other vehicles, some fully locked, at difficulty getting over. I certainly wouldn't turn down having it. If I ever get that 4Runner I'd like, it will definitely be the trail with crawl control.

Still, I won't give up a manual transmission for it if I have the option.

Maybe some people don't like crawl control because it might make them feel less manly if they used it. Insecurities can cause people to act irrational.

Or the opposite.. Technology is compensating for something... Makes you act irrationally and puts you in situations you can't get out of...

I'm throwing this down then... all you haters of electronic aids that have trucks with automatics... Pffft. Wusses. Can't you drive stick like a real driver? Isn't so much more "real" to select the gears yourself?

It's a broad brush that the ignorant paint with , assuming because someone owns an automatic means they don't have the ability to drive a manual , which isn't really the super power like some make it out to be .

Actually it seems like the people that like just accept it for what it is and the people that don't like get all spun up on being critical. Most people who like present a rational case for feeling that way and most people who don't like it go bansai in attacking it.

Nah, not intending to be ignorant; just thought provoking. I didn't intend to suggest that it's hard to drive a stick, I was suggesting that based on the anti-tech rants one would get the impression that any non-mechanical "helping" device between the wheels and the foot (ABS, traction control, AT, Descent Control, etc) has no value.

Trust me... If I could have gotten a 5 speed manual in a land cruiser here in the states, I would have.

I don't know what you are implying, but your original statement was that the system has to see a traction loss before it works. That is incorrect becasue regardless of the terrain you dial in, which helps calibrate the system befor slippage occurs , the system is working ALL or the time and torque is diverted by braking the appropriate wheels before any slippage occurs. This is the basis for modern traction and stability control which is Is a part of your crawl control. You referred to pitch, yaw and (role) sensors which detect the attitude of the car. For example, going up hill, more torque is applied to the rear wheels and the lower wheel in general BEFORE any slippage ocurrs. That helps to maintain control as does braking the rear wheels going down does this too, before loss of traction ocurrs.

SO, THE SYSTEM DOES NOT NEED LOSS OF TRACTION or wheel spin for it to work. Though, when traction loss occurs, it works harder to regain it.

In reference to the soliloquy on your opinion of crawl control. All the systems you approve of are used in concert to make crawl control work. There is nothing "new" about crawl control in general. It's just an extension and application of the systems all ready in place. Is it a gimmick ? I would argue that a rear locking differential which is everyone's fall back system to show one is a true off road affectionado, is a gimmick too.......if you don't use it. So, if you don't have one, it's a gimmick....if you have one and don't use it, it's a gimmick.

Atrac, which many people laud, is a foundational aspect of crawl control.
