...for a complete engine rebuild? 2006 Tacoma ACLB, TRD Sport, 4.0L V-6 with 186k on it. I love the truck, but it threw the dreaded P0306 code last week and it's low on coolant. Head gasket seems likely. So, since I have to basically pull the engine to do the head gasket anyway, it seems logical to put a new timing chain, water pump, etc into it at the same time. I use the truck for work every day, and I'm putting about 30k a year on it the last few years.

All you mechanical types... what should I expect to pay for this work, and how long will I have to rent a car?

    Thanks for the replies!

    Too few to list.
I'd say find a good low mileage engine to swap in. Most likely be cheaper way to go.

I got a quote from Engine Lab of Tampa for $4800.00 a few months ago. That was with a 4 yr/48,000 mile warranty. They said a week was how long it was going to take.

Then the next questions need to be, how much will the "low mileage" engine be, and who's doing the swap? To be able to compare costs.

A relatively stock Tacoma engine bay can have it swapped out in about 10-13 hours. In a regular garage. A shop could probably do it a little more quickly. I wouldn't do it without having the used engine thoroughly inspected though. Thoroughly. Burnt on oil is a no go.

    Weigh your options.

Hve you asked Toyota for ahead gasket swap quote yet?
