Hi Everyone , I've been lurking for a month or so now thinking about buying a new Tacoma (or 100 series cruiser) for the camping utility and have seen some pretty heated discussions about a diesel option. I'm still on the fence about getting a Tacoma to replace my WJ but with a diesel and stiffer frame it would be a no brainer.
There have been a ton of theories here as to why there is no small (or any) diesel in the US from Toyota but could the REAL answer be that they didn't know we wanted one?
While watching a Toyota video yesterday I came across the one in the link below. Watching the entire think wouldn't be a waste of time since they are in Moab but at 4:01 one of the engineers from corporate in Japan says " the American people's anticipation for diesel engine is much more than I expected" .

FYI the video was posted on Toyotas channel 8/24/15 so a refresh in the near future with an oil burner isn't out of the question.

While I really like most of the changes, updates and added content to the Gen 3 Taco (ugly ass grill/face excluded) it's just not enough to make me want to trade in my '15. However an available diesel 4x4 DCSB with a manual transmission would completely change that. Even with a $3-$5k premium for the diesel I would still throw my keys and $ at Toyota.

In the end I like your optimize but I'm not going to hold my breath.

As long as the Gas Tacoma keeps selling well I don't think it will happen anytime soon

If they do ever offer a diesel it will be several years off. Maybe around the time when the Ranger is supposedly supposed to be back in the market. I wouldn't hold your breath or wait for one though. You will be rather disappointed.

I'm probably going to be waiting a year or so anyway and probably get a '17 so they have time to get the bugs worked out of the new model. Who knows by then they might have a supercharged TRD PRO available. My use of it will be pretty much exclusively weekend offroad camping and road trip stuff so I would be surprised if it saw 10,000 miles a year. It would be nice to have a factory package all under warranty for a long time for when and if something went wrong. If I got a "stock" offroad it would be sitting on icon suspension and 33's before it had a thousand miles on it. Just my malfunction not that one off the dealer lot wouldn't do what I wanted it to do 95% of the time

Also it will probably take more than one model year to work out bugs.

Historically speaking.. the rug is cleaner on top than it is underneath.

100% agreed, it usually takes a year or two just to identify an issue, plus an additional 1-2 years just to design, test and release a fix. Example the Gen 2 Tacos were released (in 2004 for the 2005 model year) with the defective (rust pron) Dana manufactured frames. It wasn't until the 2010 model year did they finally fix/address the issue, ultimately bringing the manufacturing of the frames in house.

If Toyota was smart they would design and offer a D4S Turbo engine (3.0 V-6?) to compete with the Ford Eco engines in the Tundra and Tacoma TRD Pro? That would make the TRD Pro worth the $5-7k premium!

Pretty typical, engineers are totally out of touch with the consumer...

    Oh, another diesel thread.

Let's get this rolling, and maybe they'll surprise us in 2017.

There is no reason to but a diesel for $3500 more when it will be slower, much slower. Won't tow any more safety( anything much over 5k in a mid size truck is not fun) in a country that does not promote diesel fuel with subsidies and the prices difference could be all over the map. At times and in some places......enough to make the cost per mile the same or even in favor of the gas engine.
Besides...Toyota knows the wife controls the purse strings and diesels won't sell enough ;-))))))) the Colorado is $3500 more now. Toyota will out sell this truck even with a diesel 2-1.,,, why would they bother.

Just a guess but.....We found out early about the diesel Tundra. Toyota is secretive, their suppliers aren't. Toyota doesn't do R and D for diesels they sell n America it seems, they farm them out just like electric cars. We will find out if Cummins puts their smaller diesel in the Tacoma...from Cummins or someone else.

Tacoma Chief engineer says the urea injection alone adds $3000 to each truck, PLUS the additional cost of the Diesel engine. Let's say it's $1500 to $2000 for the engine.. Unless you do a lot of driving, how many here would be willing to spend around $4500 for a Taco Diesel? I might be a customer at $2000 which is VW's TDI premium, more than that, and I'm out.

I don't quite understand how GM can make a business case for a Diesel engine in their midsize trucks, but Toyota can't. Chief engineer mentions stringent EPA regs where Diesel must meet the same regulations as gasoline engines... ok.. so how does GM do it and Toyota can't / won't. I think the real reason is sales numbers. They know they will sell 100K+ gasoline Taco's and the Diesel will be in the single digit % compared to the overall sales of the gas engine, so why bother. That's my hunch as a keyboard engineer. :D

Depending on how the colorado diesel sells, Toyota will probably put the 2.8 from the hilux on the tacoma. The 2.8 is a euro 6 engine though and if the diesel in the US is not 15ppm, I doubt the 2.8 will be sold in the US.

The other thing is the US government doesn't like foreign diesel engines competing with domestic manufacturers, so who knows.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Tacoma Chief engineer also thinks turbo provide no fuel efficiency despite years of testing by Saab. He also thinks drums are better for offroading than discs, despite the fact that Land Cruisers ditched drums on the back probably in 1990 because drums fill up with mud and sand. He also thinks new truck has only a seatbelt bracket from 2gen Tacoma.
Sorry but Tacoma chief engineer is an idiot..

I don't think Sweers is an idiot, I just think he does what he has to do to please his bosses. I imagine they are putting him in a tight spot. Obviously Toyota wanted to save some money for the "redesign".

    Its like the Ford Bronco.
Toyota won't bring back diesel (at least not for a while), even though everyone has a boner for them.

...they did though. Look em up. They're rare as hell, but they made a few of the first gen 4runners with turbo diesels. I think they had some in the pickups too.
