I hate to sound like an old guy, but in this case, I agree with you.

BUT.......maybe this new engine/transmission combo will kick absolute ass. I'm done speculating, I want to drive this bitch.

    The 4.0 1GR-FE is equivalent to a Chevy gen I 350 V8 whereas the 3.5 2GR-FKS is equivalent to a GM LS V8.

How do you figure? The difference between those two generations of Chevy v8's is huge. The difference between the 4.0 and 3.5 is not even comparable to that.

    Yup
The way this works is like big house and small house.
you can host 100 people party in 500 sq ft house and 2000 sq ft house.
Both will fit 100 people but 2000 sq ft house will fit them more comfortable with out people bumping into walls and damaging things.
You may say 500sq ft house is better deal because you can fit 100 people and you paying less in taxes, but long term damage is going to be greater in 500 sq ft. house. so you want 2000 sq ft to not overload the system.
You dont need 5000 sq ft but 2000 sq ft. is better than 500 sq ft for long term.
Aka. You want over built system because it will last longer. The same principle Toyota has been applying to Land Cruiser design since its inception.

Except this is like a 1750 sq ft house versus a 2000. Since the output is the same, your 2000 sq ft house wastes 250 sq ft on hallways and mudrooms and the 1750 house is an open floor plan, so the extra space is of no consequence to the party.

The thing is that I just sold my 2004 3.4 type I two days ago, so I need to buy a truck sometime in the next few weeks. I have driven the type II 4.0 and am not really impressed with the way they accelerate. I can get a good deal on a 2015 TDR OR DC ($32k) now, or I can wait a few weeks and get a 2016 and spend a little more money. I am all about saving money, but I want to make sure I will be happy with a 2015 if I get one. In a few weeks I bet the 2015 TRD ORs are hard to find, so having them side by side to compare is not looking likely.

The 2nd gen Tacoma is one of the quicker trucks on the road. Maybe a BMW M3 is more what you need? :notsure:

    Agree......
The official time 0-60 off the site for the second gen is 7.3
    The Colorado is 7.1
Both are quicker then first Gen Taco
Testers of the 3 gen say it felt like the previous gen 2 as far as performance is concerned and another said the Colorado was a little quicker.
That all seems to indicate.....by implication, that the 2 nd gen was in the ball park of the new trucks. That makes them sufficiently quick. Unloaded
I have no problems with traffic, passing and merging with a 2015 v6. It is plenty quick enough. I had a first gen v6 and this is quicker.

I am am not going to say it is super fast, but if you need anything much quicker, you won't find it in any mid size truck.

I sold my 04 3.4 TRD OR back in May and got a 2015 4.0 DC TRD OR due to needing more room due to my daughter being born. I bought that truck in 2006 after test driving a new 2nd gen and my goal was to hit 300,000 on it. I never really cared for the 2nd gens looks compared to the 1st gen but it has grown on me. It took a little while to get used to driving an auto again. Not sure how many times i went to push the clutch in before I realized what i was doing. After having my 15 now for just over 3 months I would say it certainly has more get up and go when you punch it compared to the 3.4. The tranny is def clunkier then my wifes 11 4Runner. I wonder how that engine would do in our truck? I will probably test drive a 3rd gen when I can but will wait a few years to let them work out the bugs before even considering getting one.

I drove new 2016 and 2017 Tacoma TRD's with the 3.5L Atkinson engine and then stepped back to a 2015 TRD Off Road with the 4.0 liter engine. The newer trucks with the 3.5 Atkinson seemed to be less powerful and were constantly up-shifting and down-shifting that 6 speed automatic transmission. Not so with the 2015 4.0L trucks that I drove. I think it is due to the 4.0 hitting its highest torque (266 ft/lbs) at 4000 rpm, whereas the 3.5 liter hits it (265 ft/lbs) at 4600. The higher revs required in the newer Tacos make them feel much less like what I want in a truck.

Even though I really love some of the features that came out in 2016, I couldn't bring myself to buy a '16 or '17 after driving them. I really wanted things like crawl control, the improved interior, better entertainment package, and wireless charging pad. But having a known reliable engine and transmission won me over. I think the high revs and constant shifting in the newer trucks would have bothered me. And I'll be very interested in seeing how well the 3.5 Atkinson holds up.

Luckily I just found a 2015 TRD with under 6000 miles. I traded my old 2003 TRD for it. It was really surprising how much I got for the trade-in. I can only hope that the 2015 will be anywhere near as good as the 2003.
