Love these tires. Had the 235/85r16s on my truck for a while, but then sold the wheels and tires to DJB1 after about ~9K. Moved up to 255/85r16s on SCS f5s.

These tires have been awesome in everything I've run into so far - sand, mud, rock, rain, snow - though my truck didn't do so hot on a trail with 1-2 feet of sticky snow. I think that was less the actual tires and more the light weight of my truck and how skinny the 235s are. On packed snowy trails and and roads they did great otherwise.

With the 2.7, I went from getting 400 miles to the tank to getting around 320/330 - but if you adjust the odometer to the larger tire radius, I think that means I'm actually getting 350 to the tank... right?

Nope, don't do this. It's a complete waste of money. 87 is the way to go!

Anybody have any regrets about going to an E-rated tire on a mid-sized truck? In regards to comfort and mpg.... Looking at the 255/80R17 , but these tires are a good 12 lbs heavier than my 32" Hankooks.

I'm not 100%, but wheel and tire weight=greater or lower rotational mass, which affects MPGs and power greatly.

There was a link somewhere on TW where there was a study done and just increasing tire weight had minimal affect on mpg. I think yes it will affect your acceleration and deceleration and city mpg a little but on the highway i dont think its really going to do anything.

Through personal experience I can tell you that mpg will not change, acceleration from a stand still is slightly hindered, but you have greater rotational momentum when holding speed so you get slight mpg gain from that (don't forget that wider tires fuck you hard on mpg). The major downside which is the most important argument against heavier wheels: is that braking is so much shittier it's scary. Braking is the only thing you need worry about. Acceleration from a stop is a mild difference, mpg is no worse if you don't run significantly wider tires. Mpg actually slightly improves if you are on skinny tires and do almost solely highway driving. BRAKING, however, is a concern. I repeat: BRAKING is a concern!!

    Food for thought.

    Roger.

I prefer the look of skinnies, but also like their better driveability for a daily-driver truck. I've also read the argument that they're better for off-roading as well, except for deep sand and mud, and I never see that.

Anybody ever upgrade their brakes in a Tacoma? Just wondering if there's an easy/inexpensive kit for something like that.

Any thoughts about comfort for an E-rated tire? Like I said, daily driver, so wouldn't want something too harsh. I'd be coming from a P-rated Hankook Dynapro.

I drive E-rated and have no comfort issues. As far as brake upgrades, you can put Tundra brakes on but it will run you $550 to do it right. There isn't a cheap option that works as far as I know..

I might have to do this soon. With the e rated coopers, front and rear plate bumpers, plus all the steel plating on the frame, i probably need some heavy duty brakes..

ST Maxx are less noisy than the BFG A/T and they are also tons better both on and off road. I saw a test done comparing a handful of different tires and on wet pavement the BFG was utter rubbish and got blown away by the Maxx.
