I too have thought about doing a fullsize (Tundra or F150) over the new Taco.. just based off of price and features.

A full size wont fit in my garage.. and I don't need or want a long bed.. so a DCSB taco still fits my needs better...

I know this is the previous model, but this was sitting outside my work today...looks lifted...didn't appear to be aftermarket...looked factory. This is kinda up my alley, no bullshit truck with steel wheels.

Got me thinking about getting a fullsize...

Ford moved the rear shock mounts outside also like the Tacoma, that was a smart move instead of having them midaxle. Same 9.4 inches stock ground clearance but that 47 foot turning circle is a killer for offroad on tight trails.

That is what keeps me in a Tacoma...I look at the fullsizes...and then go oh yeah, they kinda suck on the trail...

I went the fullsize route briefly last year, thought better mpg, more goodies, fullsize, why not, then realized too much for me, Tacoma is just right, and could care less all the diesel, fullsize guys that call it cute and shit.

Toyota ain't dumb. The new Taco is enough like the 2 nd for previous owners to order sight unseen. I normally would never order a car I could not try out but obviously people are feeling confident on what they are getting. Everything about it is a known quantity. Can't say that about f150 with a turbo 2.7 six whenit first came out.

There are times I really could use fullsize, then you start comparing prices, spec, power, mpg...it kinda makes sense. I am keeping my current Tacoma, so it won't be like I wouldn't have access to small truck.

The wife however isn't too keen on getting a fullsize, she says just buy another Tacoma. I typically do all my back country exploring on a dirt bike, but I am dealing with a back injuring right now...so I am forced to take the truck. There are some places it gets tight for the Taco. That is when I think to myself do I really want a fullsize...then I see a F250 in the same spot I am in. Ha! I am in the market for a slide-in popup camper. You can get the F150 with HD payload package. The extra cab looks like it will handle MX gear bags, tackle boxes, etc and the occasional passengers better than an Access Cab Tacoma (I have no interest in the DC Tacos). Why Toyota hasn't gone with a 180º door on the AC's is beyond me...(well not actually, many things that Toyota does..don't make sense)

    A F150 is tempting.

Good point. I think the silver lining is that it's a good thing this new gen isn't a true 3rd gen in the sense that, if it is completely brand new (body and chassis designed from the ground up) then it’s guaranteed to increase in size, edging towards the physical dimensions of a full-size truck.

I saw a new Colorado the other day and that thing is pretty much Silverado size. The new Tacoma still looks lean and fit, just a bit more "toned" in the definition of those fender flares, but lost a bit "athletic" look of the 2nd gen. Not a big deal, it still looks sharp.

I would say if you go that route just get the 5.0 and don't mess with the turbos... I have a family discount with Ford but I continue to stick with Toyota... I have had good experiences with them and have picked up and dropped family at the Ford dealership while they get the truck/car repaired so I stay with Toyota. Unfortunately I am the statistic that stays with Toyota due to QDR, I've seen the alternative first hand. everyone is trying to reach the higher MPG but at what costs down the road? which is why i say, if you do go the Ford route, get the no nonsense V8.... no tricks, no frills but no problems.

EDIT: I would also say, don't get the access cab... the crash test are considerably worse than the double cab... Ford recognizes this and says they are adding better support in the A pillars next year.

    Agreed.
I want the fullsize route before my current tacoma. Bought it strictly for towing our Jeep to/from the trails. It was frigin awesome for towing. But.... I hate the size. Too damn big. That's probably my only complaint....the overall size. Just not easy to maneuver around in tight areas.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I was looking at the 5.Oh...not sure how the turbos on the EcoBoost will up hold over time. The 5.Oh has plenty of power for me. Buddy is getting 20 mpg out of his. I would have to get the Super Cab, over the Crew...since I absolutely must have the 6.5' bed...that size bed in the Crew Cab form is too long in an already big truck...156" wheel base compared to the 145" of the Super Cab...DCLB Taco has a wheel base of 140"...so the F150 Super cab with the 6.5' bed is close to the Taco. I could live with that. Track is 67" to the Taco's 63"...it is a big truck...but really not all that much bigger. Payload would be 2230 lbs verses the Tacoma DCLB of 950.

Man, when you put those numbers next to each other thats a huge difference. Making me think about a full size and I don't haul all that much. But I can see easily going over 950. Just me is 210 so now I'm down to 740... Definitely something for me to think about. Are you sure the number is 2230?

On top of that I can get a lariat for 38 right now and thats just the advertised price.

According to the payload selector it is 2230, for the configuration that I want. 4WD Super Cab, 6.5 with the 5.0. Another note the Super Cab has the darn near the same rear passenger legroom as the DC Taco.... 33.5" to the Taco's 32.6"

There are some other configurations with the payload around 3000 lbs.

Well, after test driving the new colorado, I am just not that convinced. They are nice inside, but I think we are getting the Tacoma. I do wish it had some more comparable options, but overall I think it is better in the mid-size truck category. The Tundra is just more than we care to spend to get all the options we want. So it boils down to getting options or saving money.
