    2016 Tacoma's-
Does anyone know if any device connected to the USB/AUX port via a USB cable charges the device?

I've been reading the manual and it doesn't say directly but hints that it doesn't.

If it doesn't can it be modded to charge the device?
Anyone have access to a schematic of that port?
Is it the same as other year Toyota's?

Not sure on that, but on some models won't they have the qi charging system?

Mainly asking if it charges AND is integrated into the head unit.

Qi charging is a different subject. Looking to charge a device and have it work off the head unit.

It will charge, but will it transfer data, is a good question. Usually, that's done thru bluetooth streaming from the device to the head unit.

My wife has a 2011 Highlander and yes you can charge with the USB port. It doesn't charge as quick as it does plugged into the wall at home but it will charge.
And you can transfer data with it too. Or transfer data via bluetooth.

The USB spec requires the port be powered. If it isn't powered then they can't put the USB symbol on there. But like Herniator noticed, USB ports for data usually deliver less power than charge-only spec port. Most likely it is USB 3.0 and can deliver 900mA. If Toyota decided to live in 2010 then it may be a USB 2.0 which is only good for 500mA which will take a while to charge any modern phone or tablet. If it is a charge only port then it can deliver up to 1500mA.

As long as there is some charge, you could, say, have a dedicated, older iPod (like I do), and have the thing fully charged and maintain that charge by leaving it connected all the time. That's enough for me.

Short of the lesser power for charging, the USB speed will make little to no difference with regard to playing music.

Every Toyota I've used with a USB port will charge and transfer data.

    Stock and loving it
If it moves data, it's powered at .5A. There are laptops that can offer a USB data with more amperage, but it's rare. Some of the USB-eSATA ports do it to power the SATA

USB charge-only can reach 4A. It's not uncommon for tablets

This is what I do. Hopefully there's a way to run the cable from the USB port into the back of the glove box cleanly. My current aftermarket head unit has a USB port in the back, so my iPod setup is not visible at all.

USB host specifications *REQUIRE* that 500 mA be provided to slave devices. This is a necessary power supply that slave devices require in order to power on. There is nothing special in this regard about a "charging" port. However, any USB port that is specifically labelled as a "charging" port may actually be *only* a charging port. I.e., it might not be connected to anything for data transfer -- charging only.

Cell phones and other USB devices use this guaranteed 500 mA in order to charge themselves.

There are a very select few devices that are crippled by their manufacturers such that they will refuse to accept a charge without a special handshake. I am not certain if any still do this, but among these manufacturers USED to be both Apple and RIM (Blackberry). I don't think that either are still doing this, but could be wrong. This was a dirty trick that they used in order to boost sales of their own overpriced chargers.

Some USB ports can be provisioned for high current delivery, sometimes known as "fast charge" or "quick charge". These ports may deliver 2000 mA at a higher voltage, such as 12 volt. For example, Qualcomm Quickcharge can operate at voltages up to 12. These fast charging protocols require a negotiation in order for the host to confirm that supplying the extra current won't damage the slave device, but if that protocol is not agreed on, then these ports *still* provide the guaranteed 500 mA.
