Finally finished. Took me way longer then I care to admit, but man that smooth quite ride is so worth it. Two tips: pick up the puller attachment that goes with slide hammer. I first tried using one of my own pullers and it didn't have the right angle to lock down on the CV. I finally did exactly what OP did and got CV out in 5 mins. Putting CV back in... This thread was saying to rethread axle nut and hammer CV back in straight. The CV would just compress and absorb the energy. Finally stuck a 24 in crow bar into one of the notches on CV and started popping it towards diff. It went in with very little effort.

Glad my method helped! I've been wondering how others have put the CV back in. Good method to know.

To all, I'm sorry I've been neglecting this thread, but I hope to update the Original post to have to keep you (ya'll) from hunting through all the pages to find part numbers etc.. I'd like to personally thank @nj636 for popping his head in here and there to answer questions anyone might have. He's got more experience in this area I'm betting. I was just fortunate enough to have the time, help, and location to take pictures and provide that one thing that guy did on TW to change CV axels out.
I'm more than happy to answer any questions you shoot at me. I'm on TacomaWorld, I know stuff!
    Thanks guys!

this is my method as well. Sometimes it goes in nice, other times it sucks. I've noticed the retainer ring sometimes plays a role - I lube it and position it either where the notch is upwards or downwards (I forget - you think I'd have written it down by now)

Thanks for all of the general knowledge on this thread.
Does anyone have any insight on converting a 2nd generation to a straight axle. Pro's & Con's?
I have a 2001 with a broken side axle. I pulled it off last night and just looking at the front axle im curious how it would ride with a straight axle?
Im a Newby here, THanks for any insight in advance.

Totally frustrated at this point. I was ABSOLUTELY convinced that I had bad bearings. Tore everything apart, put new bearings and seals in...the noise is still there.

A "squeeeeeeeeeeeeee" that persists at speed, whether or not the engine is running, and doesn't go away until the tires are dead stopped. It vaguely reminds me of the squeal that a belt makes when it needs replaced, but not exactly. Helpful, I know.

The good news is that I did actually need new bearings, so not all is lost, but I'm now pretty confused as to what the real problem is.

Oh I thought you were talking about the CV needle bearing

In other news my new question is: Cv needle bearing? Does it go away when you put it in 4 high?

^ Description doesn't match the needle bearing at all. The description sounds like a perfect match to the brake pad wear indicators hitting the rotor. Or maybe a bent heat shield around the rotors.

A ball joint fork worked great on my sisters Matrix for both removal and install. Don't know if it will work for the Tacos, but thought I throw that out for consideration. Not to slide into the axle but to grab that notch.

Idler pulleys.Could have a bad bearing as well. I know mine went out the first time I went through mud. They're not protected so they fail easily.

Here's a video... I think the sounds translated pretty well despite the wind and road noise. Notice how it doesn't really change a whole lot with engine revving or speed.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzE4o0TK_bWwbFlMR2VnVk54cjA/view?usp=sharing

Would that be something that kept moving even with the engine turned off?

It stays consistent in both 4H and 4L.

I couldn't distinguish noise in video. Post the time noise first comes in.

Thinking out loud about things that make noises with engine off: wheel bearings (you changed the front; did you look at the rears?); u-joints; carrier bearing (do SB's have one?); F/R brake rotor/pads/shoes (pads mentioned by 05Moose); differential; and finally, an odd aerodynamic sound.

I didn't look at the rears...everyone that's heard it in my truck agrees it's coming from the front, I haven't looked at anything in the back to be honest.

I can hear it distinctly at about :12, then again clearly at :25-:30 when I come to a stop. Finally, ~:44 to the end, I was driving next a curb that really amplified it. I guess it's all I can hear since it's been driving me crazy...apologies if you can't hear it, I was hoping it would trigger a "hey, I know that sound!" from someone.

So I just bought my 09 offroad with 126000. The truck has no lift on it. I drove it home and thought man these tires are loud!! They were wore out anyway so I go and get brand new tires. That didn't fix it. I started listening closer and could easily tell it wasn't the tires. So I come to Tacomaworld to try to diagnose my problem. I thought I had it narrowed down to the needle bearing issue in this thread when I read all about it. So the next day I put my truck in 4wd thinking that the noise would go away but it didn't. My question is this: Can this be my problem even though the noise doesn't go away when it's in 4wd? Has this ever been documented? I do have quite a bit more play in my driver's side CV than the passenger. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

My old ears cannot readily distinguish the myriad sounds. You may want to start a new thread to get more attention to the problem.

I did notice your alignment appears to be off. At :51+ when it appears you are driving straight down the road, your steering wheel is quite off center. Have you noticed any abnormal tire wear? If one tire is not pointing strait, that could generate a unique sound, as if you are dragging something if I recall from experience. Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback. The part of the video you mentioned was actually going around a gentle corner, it just looked straight. Brand new tires (less than 500 miles) and alignment, so that should be all good.

I've checked the U-joints and rear brakes, nothing seemed obnoxiously out of place. I'm still considering the carrier bearing as a suspect, but have run out of free time to futz with it. It's going in to the dealer today for diagnosis, then maybe a driveway fix if it's within my abilities.

No one out there has an opinion about my problem? I am going to go ahead and change both hub/bearing assembly and see if that fixes it since when I put it in 4wd nothing changes.
    Thanks
