How does the TRD Sport perform on roughish gravel roads? I mainly mountain bike and I travel on logging roads that tend to use larger chunks of rock when they re-gravel. That is the extent of the "off roading" I do?

I ride roughly 3-5 times per week. Other than that it will be on highways.

Given that description id get whichever one feels better to you ON the road. Either one can handle that gravel you describe just fine I'm guessing

Like Shwaa said but to give you some perspective I have gotten my sport stuck up the rear bumper in stand and still crawled out done 30 down gravel roads just fine it comes down to personal choice but either will fit your needs IMO

TRD sport will absolutely be fine and you won't have the plastic mirrors and chrome bumper penalty.

I agree with all the above. The ride is very similar, and I've had my sport through a lot of crap. All in a set of tires that suit your need. Unless your going 2wd. Then I would say o/r so at least you have the locker to help you out.

Does the larger air volume in 16" wheels affect the ride?

Ideally, I'd like to just glide over the gravel and rock at like 30+ mph as we run several mile shuttles. Smooth, comfortable ride is what I'm looking for.

16 inch tires will give you a softer ride, but, you could always get off road wheels for the sport if you like the look of it better.
