Oil Filter - Purolator is kind of short.

I just stocked up on 4 oil filters. I just got the truck and I have always used Purolator filters and full synthetic oil. I looked up the part number for the Purolator filters (before and now after ordering), but I am surprised to find this part (PSL10241) to be a bit shorter than the filter installed by the dealer. Is this common?

I've been swapping between these and a Toyota filter that IS NOT the correct part (15601-76009-71 for the really anal and doom sayers) number but works for several years, 205k on my 97 Runner. Will do same on my recently procured Tacoma.

that you use a QUALITY filter of similar size is the most important.

 

probably wont hurt a thing.... just next time when stocking up hit up ebay... you can get 10 OEM long filters and 10 drain plug gaskets for 40-45 bucks.

 

Housing size doesn't mean much, it is the area of the filter media that does (among other things) which can vary significantly between brands of the same size filter.

90915-YZZD3. I've yet to see one that's as long as the 90915-YZZD3. There may be one; I just haven't seen it.

My 2015 Tacoma is new, so I've only used 90915-YZZD3(dealer) thus far.

In all of my other vehicles that I've maintained for many years, I've used every oil filter imaginable, including the dreaded Fram and have never had any oil filter/oil system related issues with any oil filter or brand of oil.

 

The problem with Fram (aside from the cardboard internal construction, poor build quality and very low filter area) is the drain back valves are claimed to leak, meaning dirty unfiltered oil is re-entering your oil supply. The job of an oil filter is to keep dirty contaminates out of your oil supply, so it is not doing its job. Will it cause your engine oil/filter related issues? Not likely. Will it cause more wear on your engine than a superior filter? Yes.

 

Don't let yourself be fooled, the Toyota filters drain back as well. some are worse than others, but they do drain back. used many on my old 22R/RE's and could count on most of the time they would drain by the time I got everything ready and went for the filter.

90915-YZZF1 filters in the forklifts ( also used in older Camry and a few other ) do drain back, I actually count on this when servicing to not make a mess ( shut down, wait 5min ) no mess.

I honestly think it has more to do with the engine and it's oil passage configuration. The Toyota industrial diesel engines seem to be a lot better about not draining back. the filter I use on the 3.4 in my 4Runner is the same filter used on the diesels ( 1DZ and 11Z-15Z) and will be using same on my Tacoma 4.0 in the future ( 15601-76009-71 )

 

The closest WIX filter to the longer OEM Toyota is a 51516. Have used since 1st oil change, and been very pleased.

 

I always use OEM Oil Filters because back in the day my 04 Taco didn't like aftermarket ones. Now i just stick to OEM stuff and the truck stays happy. That's me though...

 

Use the bigger one: PSL20195, or Mobil 1 M1-209, or the Bosch D3422, or Royal Purple 20-400.

 

I have a bosch one thats much shorter than OEM as well. I don't think they make a huge difference as long as you're not using the ones with cardboard internals.

 

That Purolator filter seems the size that the 4-cylinders use.

 

That study was last updated in 2000. You can consider it obsolete as a lot has changed in 15 years. Probably the best way to test the effectiveness of an oil filter is to send an oil sample to an oil analysis company, ie Blacksone, Oil Analyzers, Wix, etc...

 

@chris4x4 did a in depth study off a lot of the filters on the market and IIRC the oem was at the top of the list between all tested. I'm on my phone but there is a thread floating around here. Very in depth and made me realize the OEM is the only filter I'll use. Never had one bit of issue with it.

Yup... there it is.

 

the length of the filter doesn't necessarily mean that it will hold less oil in it or filter less. These after market companies makes filters vehicles specific so I am pretty sure they have done their homework and made a filter that will hold close to or as much media as the OEM filters do. In this case, size does not matter as much as long as it holds the same amount of media or you are making up for the difference in the amount of oil you are putting into your truck. it's all in the size of the media the filter can hold. I've never cut one open but maybe the OEM filter just has some wasted space, that's why it is longer than all the other filters. this is just MHO! I use Wix-51348 which is what is called for the Tacoma and when I pour in the required amount of oil 5.5 qt, it puts the oil right at the mark as it would with the OEM filter. Hope this information is helpful and doesn't get people to caught up on the size of the filter but focus more on how it functions. Giggity!

You do know Toyota doesn't actually make filters, right? That it's one of the couple manuf. out there painted black with a Toyota emblem on it?

Not that there is anything wrong with it, just that it's low bidder for some period of time or quantity of units. What we don't know is who is doing the QC on the manuf.

I've discovered that the filter for my V6 '04 Highlander is the same as for my L4 '13 Tacoma.
