Help, I can't pass inspection. In N.C here with '02 Tacoma and it won't pass with this fail code. The engine check light comes on as it is supposed to when the engine is cranked and goes out shortly after as it is supposed to. The inspection is showing as fail thought the danged light is off. I have driven the truck over 300 miles in hopes of clearing it out to no avail. Anybody heard of this type of thing? I am so frustrated with going in 4 times with no observable problem only to get the dreaded fail on my inspection.

Not sure what you are referring to. The fault code is MIL Commanded On

I didn't think the ECM's on the 1st Gens were flashable.

I suggest taking it to a shop that knows what they are doing as it sounds like it is simply stating that it can command the CEL on (aka the Maintenance Indication Lamp).

All I know is if a ECU can be re-flashed by the dealer, they can have the parameters changed. It "May" need to be re-flashed due to corrupted data.

Go to the dealer. The Toyota diagnostic system will likely be able to pull more information than the generic scan tools.

No, it hasn't. It passed inspection last year and I have driven it maybe 300-400 miles since then. No work done on the truck since last inspection.

That's probably what I'll have to wind up doing. It makes me so effin mad that I have to pay money for a friggin problem that doesn't even exist. I'm going to the DMV tomorrow to ask for a waiver and the pecker head there is going to catch hell if he won't do it. I have two fails documentation paperwork and I'll have the truck there for him to see that the light comes on and then goes off as it is supposed to. I'll let you all know how that turns out.

Out of curiosity, when was the last time you replaced the thermostat? After the coolant has warmed up, is the temp gauge needle sitting lower than where it would normally be?
