Arn't ya doing the wrench fest on Sunday the 13th? I''m thinking about doing both. I know I need to get in touch to find out where. I have only been going to the Jamboree on Saturday, stay for the raffle around 5:00 and head home. Although the night ride is good too.

    Pfft mods ain't shit.

I went for a 2 night trip to southern Indiana this weekend, in part to ride in a dual sport and in part to test out the sleeping accommodations in the truck in preparation for our trip Sept 3. The truck / air mattress / pump / inverter / window screens / storage bins / etc all worked great.

There's some interesting off road stuff down that way. We were near Norman Indiana and the Hoosier National Forest. Quite a few abandoned roads that were quite rutted, some neat off road, and some fun creeks to drive through and cross and such.

Speaking of truck mods I have one mod I bet none of you have, bet none of those Jeeps (especially that long ass one) at Quaker Steak have either.... half bought / half built me the ultimate bear repellent for our 'middle of nowhere, Montana' camping spots...

The lock is through a clevis pin and the whole lock assembly thing drops out as soon as you unlock the padlock, leaving the gun ready to rock right there. It's accessible from the front seat and is right above your head when you are sleeping in the back. It's tight enough to the ceiling that it isn't visible from outside unless you hunch down and look up, and the tinted windows obscure it even more.

First round is a beanbag round and subsequent rounds are buck and slug.

    Yes it's legal!

Legally speaking I think you may be on thin ice. I have no firsthand knowledge to qualify that claim, only what I gather from online research. It would seem that laws concerning the transportation of guns vary widely from state to state and county to county. Under the Firearm Owners' Protection Act, you can legally transport firearms from a place you are allowed to posses them to another place you are allowed to possess them and skirt the laws of places in between... yet there are strict rules on how you have to transport firearms. Locked and not loaded is one stipulation, it can't be accessible from the passenger compartment, if you're vehicle does not have a trunk separate from the passenger compartment then it must be locked in a "container" (don't know the legal definition, but I imagine that would mean a rigid walled box one could not see into or handle the contents of without unlocking?)

Apparently in certain states and areas law enforcement treats FOPA as an affirmative defense. So, you get arrested and processed before they entertain the idea that you may be legally transporting firearms under federal law...

Now, if the states/areas that you are driving through allow the transportation of firearms in the manner you are transporting them then FOPA would be irrelephant (that's an animal, look it up)
but wouldn't there be plenty of places in the country that you could not transport your firearm in the way it is pictured without the potential hassle of getting arrested and having to cite FOPA before you'd be released?

I am purely bringing what little info I can find on the interwebs to the table so that people more in the know than myself can shed some light on it. I am very curious about how the law works for firearm transportation as it is something that I have to be in compliance with for hunting and traveling. I don't know if you're an LEO or Veteran, Mark, so if you have some exemptions and allowances on your end please let me know so that I don't get the idea that I can bumble around doing the same thing as you!

Now to patiently wait for impending knowledge-bomb:popcorn:

    FUPA??? Lol

    Knowledge bombs away:

I am a cop... and as such am covered under LEOSA, which is essentially a federal law that trumps any state or local laws as they pertain to gun carrying anywhere in the US. Basically, as a cop, LEOSA says you can lawfully carry a concealed firearm (without specifying what type, except no machine guns and no silencers) anywhere. This is generally understood to mean handguns but it also covers long guns as they are not specifically exempted.

http://le.nra.org/leosa.aspx (quotes the actual wording of the law)

http://leosaonline.com/ (authored for the USAF SP but is a good summary)

Now that notwithstanding, I have tried to be in compliance with Ohio law.... mostly. If there are gaps in the way I am carrying it versus Ohio law then I trust that a) most cops won't notice it; b) those that do won't care; c) I'll be ignored since I am a cop; d) LEOSA will kick in if I encounter the one cop in 100 who wants to be a shithead about it. Although loaded in the picture, I plan on carrying that unloaded on the trip; and will shuck 5 rounds into it prior to camping out each night and then unload it and lock it up each morning. I can't say with total certainty that the ceiling mount qualifies as a "case / container" but I think you could argue that it does - it's purpose built for the storage of a long gun, locks, and keeps the gun inaccessible to anyone without the key. "Case" is an optional criteria anyway, if you are in compliance with other criteria you may not require a case. Ohio requires that the gun stored in a vehicle w/out a trunk and not in a case be in plain sight, which, again, this kind of is - but not really. It's in plain sight if you consider that the only thing keeping you from seeing it is people's natural inclination to not "look up"... if they would look up, they'd see it, plain as day. That can't possibly be considered "hidden". So you've got most of the standards as required by Ohio law: unloaded, container, locked, plain sight.

    http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/2923.16

Ohio actually has fairly restrictive transport laws but they are seriously muddied by the implementation of the CHL. The law says a guy with a CHL can be carrying 100 concealed, loaded handguns on him while in a car, yet he can't have a loaded rifle in the car. Makes no sense. For that reason, most cops that I know, myself included, won't even mess with someone who is carrying a firearm unless there is a problem involving that firearm, or alcohol involvement, or what have you. Other states, especially out west, have significantly less restrictive long gun transport laws and many allow carry of a loaded shotgun or rifle in the vehicle.

So in summary: I'm specifically exempted but even if I wasn't I believe I would be covered with this method of transport; and even if in some bizzaro universe (New Jersey? Chicago?) I wasn't, I doubt I'd have any contact with police for them to even start poking around.

I'm a pretty laissez faire mother fucker though. I don't care what you do as long as you aren't hurting someone else that doesn't deserve it.

I have total respect for police officers. You guys have an extremely tough job, that most folks don't appreciate. A lot of folks hate police, unless its their ass in a sling, then police don't get there fast enough or do enough. Police are only enforcing what we as citizens have collectively enacted. If we don't break the law, generally speaking we don't have anything to worry about. Stepping off my soapbox.

Thanks man. All joking about firefighters aside, I feel a real brotherhood with you guys. We are both the city's bitches, and a lot of times on some dim 0230 scene we are the only backup for each other. No one really knows the shit we do, the shit we see, the shit we live with except other cops and firefighters. Plus you guys feed me really well.....
