So... since my Tacoma was stolen last week and my insurance company has settled shockingly quickly I'm now in the search for a new vehicle and pretty much down to the two above. I know lots of people here have experience with 4Runner to hopefully have a knowledgeable opinions for me. Since I live in SoCal now so I don't own a house like I did before so don't really need a truck for using the bed other than when I camp and sleep back there (I would add a shell to a Tacoma if I go that way or get a CVT roof tent for a 4Runner) so now I'm pretty flexible between the two. What are people's thoughts on the two? I would be going with the moonroof package on the Tacoma. I know part of it is just "go drive the two and see what you like better", but also wanted to pick people's brains who have Taco vs. 4Runner experience.

Used to be you had to pick. Either haul people or haul cargo in the bed. With the DC, you can do both. Get the Tacoma.

This choice is like an older Lexus or a newer Camry.
It will be tough because the 4 Runner will be a more upper level vehicle with more passenger refinement. There will also be more rear seat room. Knowing that the 4Runner is a much more sturdily built vehicle, I lean to that. I used to own a 4 Runner and now have a Taco....only becasue the 4Runner is much more money. If I had the chance and could afford it, 4 Runner..

I had a 4 Runner 11 years older then my now new Taco 2015. It was a much nicer vehicle then even a new Taco. The frame has not changed too much on either for example. I would much rather face a crash in the fully boxed frame of the 4Runner then the c channel Taco.....no comparison in structural strength between the two. The basic underpinnings on the 4 Runner is used in the GX Lexus. Taco is the lowest end truck frame vehicle. The taco is built of paper mâché compared to the 4Runner.

You do realize the front end of the Tacoma is fully boxed where 95% of the time your most likely to get hit or hit someone. The Tacoma has larger crumple zone and a really stiff structure, just because its a c channel doesn't mean its paper and gonna die in a accident like you make it out to be

image.jpg Yah....the boxed frame is to support the mechanics, mainly engine and tranny. I invite you to crawl under a 4Runner and check for yourself. The frame size difference is significant. When I parked my new Tacoma next to the 11year old 4Runner, I could only take solice in the fact they cost the same 11 years apart. The Taco is a good vehicle, don't get me wrong. The 4 Runner is in a difference class of vehicles. They used to be based on the smaller truck. They have not been for many years. Standard features like climate control, power lumber seats much better seating in the rear etc. are not found on the taco or only found when you buy a 2016 model like the limited which cost nearly as much. If you are going to put a cap on the crew cab.....you are better off with a much more sturdily built 4Runner.
2005 I believe, the 4Runner had one of the lowest death rates per mile of any vehicle made.

Btw, the most frequent collision is rear ending by a following car/truck. Put me in a 4 Runner ! Oh....my 2004 SR5 had standard ATrac and discs on ALL FOUR WHEELS
2015 will have features you can't even get on a Tacoma....apples and oranges...green apples and fresh oranges from Florida

That looks awesome as an off road toy or commercial vehicle. As cool as it looks, though, I could never imagine owning that in person and driving through the neighborhood in that. lol

It's the same color as the new Tacoma.

I own a 2015 Trail, it's significantly nicer than the 2nd gen Tacoma I had. Honestly though, I would wait to decide until you actually get to test drive a 3rd gen. Maybe they managed the close the gap a little.

Get the 4runner. You'll feel good knowing you're driving a Japan built Toyota like they're supposed to be. Also doesn't hurt that you can actually drive a 4runner in 4 wheel drive without it binding.

One annoying thing you will have to do is swap out the rear disc brakes for drums on the 4runner because according to this forum they are better for offroading.

The 4 Runner has a real back seat comfortable for real people. If it's your only car and you take others, the Taco will do it no where near as comfortably.

I don't think anyone on this forum is suggesting drums are better. That came from Toyota.
