Have you even had someone come to look at it yet? If it's still working but just not keeping things cool it could be a number of maintenance issues like a dirty coil, low on freon, ect. I just went through this same thing with my home. Cost me $750 and I expect to get quite a few more years out of the system before I have spends thousands to replace the whole thing.

Fortunately Ive got a couple friends that do a/c work. One of them just replaced the fan motor and capacitor about 4-5 months ago. Only charged me $100! The unit is old and needs yo be upgraded to a 2.5 ton. Once the a/c gets swapped I will be renting a insulation sprayer from home cheapo and spraying 10-15 rolls of insulation in the attic. Spray the insulation about 1'-1.5' thick.

I also need to spray some more insulation in my attic. Mine is only ~7-8" thick. Being a first time home owner I'm a little upset that this wasn't mentioned in the "home inspection" but what can you do.

Sounds like we are in the same boat, lol. The master bdrm is about 5* warmer than the rest of the house at times. Little to no insulation above the garage which shares attic space with the master bdrm. Wish this wouldve been mentioned at time of inspection but they only look to see that everything is working and the house is in live-in condition.

maybe it just needs a general maintenance check if it is the second ac in a 20 year old house it should still be good for a couple of years.

If you have any equity in the house get a home equity line of credit. With rates so low take advantage of them. Last I saw I could get a 4 percent loan. Many ac installer can offer free financing also.

This would actually make a lot of sense assuming you plan on being on your house for a few years, no tax penalty and the interest would be tax deductible.

At this point it's beating a dead horse, but money in your 401k should be used for actual emergency events. I'd even recommend against using it for the first time home buyer exception. If you're thinking of taking it out for an a/c, I highly recommend finding a better savings method.

Normally this is where I'd recommend a cc with no interest for a long period of time, but I'm going to assume you wouldn't pay it off in those amount of months otherwise the 401k shouldn't have been a thought.

You went this far into summer without it, tough it out.

The promotion is here and gone... but you can call and ask if they will still honor it. Worst they can say is no! Good luck

Not going to touch the 401k at this point. Not worth the price it will cost to utilize the funds. Fall is coming up along with some cooler months very soon. Hopefully we can get another season or so out of it. For now, it's still doing its job. Thanks for the all the input and suggestions...

The slate doesn't have a cash back system so this is bull shit. The freedom has never went over $200 cash back for $500 spent and that's only came up twice in the past 12 months.

    Spew your shit elsewhere

My bad captain credit card fact man. It was a chase freedom. And yes it was 300 cash back for first 500 spent in 90 days of account activation. Along with a 25 or 50 referral for a friend.

Mine was a special offer for existing card members at the time. And yes it was 300 for 500 spent. I know what the promo was and for me to sit here and explain my finances to you is ridiculous. Lol, go enjoy the rest of your Saturday.

Agree with most of the other responses on only raiding retirment in dire emergency.

That said, do you have a provision that allows a loan from your 401? Those are generally tax & penalty free and you pay yourself back with interest.
