So the first guy says that he "doesn't compete with other dealerships" and he doesn't think that the sales chiefs will take the $900 off...sounds like complete BS to me...they ALL compete with one another. So we will see if he can lop the $900 off.

Second, the guy who WILL take the $900 off says that to take a deposit to order one that I want, says that short of the truck being defective or having cosmetic issues, he wouldn't put in the order with the deposit if I thought that I would simply not want the truck when it comes in. Has anyone else heard this? I'm not sure what that is all about...if I didn't want it because I couldn't see well over the dash because of no height adjustment, for example, why should I be beholden to the thing?

The only thing that I can think of is this: wait to test drive one that comes in, THEN take the $900 off offer. Any ideas from anyone?

The guy who wants to give you 900 and then sell you the truck for sure only wants to give you a non refundable deposit

    It's legal in California

Be prepared to walk if you don't get the deal you want. Your feet are your most useful weapon when negotiating. You HAVE to be able to say nope ...Maybe next time. There are a LOT of dealers some are selling at MSRP others $2000 under and others at invoice or below.

Speaking to the above, and your guys advice, the best I could get in town (between a few dealers) was about $900 off. The other guys that I went to were your typical, pushy salesmen, and I hate that. So I went with the $900 difference, and a guy that seemed the most trustworthy and wasn't pushing. I'm not sure where the others are getting these below invoice deals...it certainly is not in the northeast!

You are in CT, that may be a reason why too. Not sure how much time and energy you want to sink into this, but maybe look out of state.

Get rid of the hitch step and nerf bars and you are under 40k.

Absolutely agree, the location has a lot to do with it. Due to my job and family concerns, I am not really able to search far and wide. You are right concerning the bars and step, but I actually do want these, as my wife is 4'11"! I'm just happy that, in an area where 2/3rds of the allocation of every dealership that I went to is already either spoken for or reserved, that I was able to get them to budge at all. That $900 can enable me to buy a few more goodies myself after.

Got ya. The steps are quite high in price for something that will rot out in 2 NE winters. For that price you can get something much more substantial that will last for longer than the life of the truck and look a shit ton better, imo.

Point well taken, I have to consider that. The other question that I had is what do any of you guys recommend as far as aftermarket tonneau covers goes?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned 'INVOICE'? Doesn't anyone negotiate for INVOICE anymore? That should be a good $3000 under MSRP.

I estimated it to be between 2-2,500 below MSRP based on other numbers on the forum. Armed with this, and talked to at these dealers, the deal I got was the best that I could eek out of any of them.

I have email quotes for a 2WD TRD Sport w/ FP and towing for $32725 +tax Invoice is 32736

Another for a Limited 4x4 with towing for $36065 Plus Tax Invoice is $36568

Some smaller dealers want more allocation and apparently will take a skinny deal from an out of town buyer

Thus the very real benefit of these smaller dealers. Unfortunately, there are none of those here!

When one lives in million people populations there are a lot of buyers for few initial trucks, so those dealers can hold out for MSRP and see how many fish they catch. One horse town dealers don't have people clamoring for $35,000 turkc in a low income state and fewer buyers. The avg FICO in SC is 655. Not good. I think those of us who have 800+ scores and or can pay cash drive the market here

You are totally correct. How I wish that there was a "middle of nowhere" here. At least I got the $900 off I did. The other guys absolutely refused to move, even with the other dealership's price in their face.

You want to get it at a lower price? Don't be one of the guys that has to have one of the first ones to hit the dealership. I walked when I bought my 2011 because they wanted MSRP. Went to another dealer and they wanted to move vehicles not make a little more on each one. Got it for 4k less. First one called me back a week later and got his feelings hurt again finding out I bought one. Told him when I tell you that you have one chance to sell me a truck you might want to listen instead of pitching your bs.

There is no penalty for paying it off early with Toyota finance. The dealer gets their money immediately. Toyota finance also beat everyone else on financing including my own bank.

edit: Also told them if they wanted to get the kickback for financing they could pay TT&T. GFY San Diego. :D

THIS is the kind of take control action people need to take. Getting emotionally involved with having to have a new truck NOW is in the dealer's favor. They NEED to sell product. We do NOT need to buy from them. We can take a $79 flight to buy one. I went thought this with the new Miatas. Now the dealer has eight of them sitting at MSRP and I am not a buyer anymore. Wasn't going to pay $2000 over. I am putting that money into the Tacoma.

I sold my truck earlier than anticipated but i still have my 12 MX5 and the wife's CRV so I can go indefinitely if I have to. I have an opportunity to buy one now at a small dealer. My local dealer wants the business but are not stepping up. So I will likley drive to the small dealer and put a deposit down on vaporware at this point and hope they get an allocation of one of the two vehciles I want. 2WD TRD Sport FP Towing or 2WD Limited with towing,

Of course every location has a different market. Limited's are far and few between anywhere within a couple hundred miles from me. Mine actually came from 250 miles away, but was fresh out of the factory and just rolled of the transport truck. I paid cash for my Limited and was offered $500 off and they wouldn't budge. Of course, they had to do a dealer trade so that puts limits on the deal, too. so I accepted only if they sold me the supercharger and TRD ivan stewart wheels, swap tires and sensors to new wheels and mount/balance/ install at their cost and install supercharger at a reduced labor rate. I've bought several vehicles cash deal and never really get any better deal than if financed, those days are long gone. many will beg you to do some kind of financing because it makes them look good. Also, sometimes there are rebates tied to financing. You just gotta check at the time of purchase.
