I've mounted my HiLift Jack on the bars on the back of my truck. It will be exposed to the elements all the time. Does anyone have any recommendations on keeping it in good operating condition and what to put on it to keep it from rusting? I'm sure there is something out there to coat the jack but I'm unaware of where to look. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I've had my jack since '81 - and its been outside and working ever since. Its been hanging on a Blazer, F-150, Cherokee, Dodge SLT and now the Taco. I just wash the mud off (after it gets in the mud) and squirt motor oil on the working parts. Those years haven't been on salted roads tho.

I believe the operative words are WORK - and LUBRICATE. The mechanism can't just be left to solidify, it wasn't meant to be an ornament. Mine has pulled up plenty of fence posts and run a lot of fire roads.

Nice truck - I happen to like the white 4 dr variety............

Yeah, I've been taking it off each time I wash the truck and run it through the cycle. I've been keeping all the moving parts lubed. Just curious about the rust and how to prevent it.

i bought one off craigslist that was the rustiest i had ever seen, 10 bucks, sanded it all down to bare metal, painted it, installed new hardware and then mounted it in the truck. No rust as long as u cover up the nicks and keep it lubed like other have said.

Too poor to list anything interesting.
I wipe it down and get all the dirt/mud off it. And then hit it with tri-flow about once a month. There's a little surface rust on some areas where it's used. But apart from that, I've had no issues with parts sticking.

I've had mine since around '88 and as others have said, keep it lubed and touch up the paint as needed. When it stayed on my Land Cruiser I usually had it in one of the black Hi-Lift storage bags; I think I've been through like three of them over the years. Looking at their website they offer a neoprene mechanism cover and what I'm guessing is a newer version of what I have.

That's what I was looking for. Thanks for the link. I didn't really want to use regular WD40. That seems like it might last a little longer.

I'd like to have one of those bags but the way it's mounted on my rack I don't think it would work.
