Open root flux core plate test in 15 minutes for my job. First time running open root for flux. Should be fun.

I like the idea of being able to leave the trailer at a job and get supplies.

Sounds like fun, I didn't care for open root flux with ceramic tape backing, I couldn't imagine no backing.

I cheated a little. I was struggling with a keyhole blowing out while going up hill with the 1/8" gap...no idea how the hell to get it to run without blowing out.. So I cranked it up and ran it downhill fast. Its going to get back welded anyway.

They also made us bend 4-1" coupons. Not used to that. 3 were perfect but 1 had about a 1/16" spot in the side. QC wont be here until the 28th so i got a while till I find out if its okay or not.

I will admit it was one of those 'fake it till you make it ' situations. I am experienced in flux core welding since my last job was 100% flux core. But the thing is, every flux core test I've done was with a backing strap. Not open root. So it was a whole new situation for me and I couldn't find any videos on YouTube or anything to get an idea of how to do it too :pout:

So yea I went against the procedure and just backgrinded the hell out of it to hopefully get any pockets of slag out.

I need to buy my own machine to practice at home but I can't buy the machine without money and need the job to make money.

I definitely want to practice more with it though to be prepared for the next test.

Wow It has been so long since I learned to do a 1/8" open root that I run on auto pilot just from muscle memory

Just what code do you need to qualify for ??

    You should know .

6010 vertical is being a PITA, I can't get the timing on the whip correct.

A fellow student and I are starting to take side jobs, he will be the main welder, but I have most of the equipment and a better place to do it, and he also wants me around because he doesn't understand structural stuff as well as I do, got our first customer via the school shop today, job is scheduled to happen Friday morning.

The other guy thought of business cards, so I may be getting some like this with contact info on the back.

Our instructor is telling us to go for it, he has confidence in our abilities and our town needs a good welding company to handle the small jobs and evolve into a profitable shop.

Sounds like you're over thinking the whip. There's no specific pattern or timing to go by. Its more or less how you feel the weld. It sounds crazy but you just gotta find something that works. Left, right, up. Left right up. Left right up lol.

I probably am, on flat I was able to time it with a simple 1-2 count, but only one time has a vertical weld look "right" to our instructor, my biggest thing is staying in the puddle to long and coming to far back down with the whip.

They don't look near as good as that, I'll get some pictures tomorrow at class.
Your vertical look very similar to my flat.
