Do you think they will be close or will the 07 4runner pull significantly better b/c of the v8 and torque diff.

How good shape is this puppy. If it Is 8 years old with 200k mile rust and worn engine uncared for trans, you could mistakenly think it still pulls it's designed weight and what are you pulling

One can never have too many light bars.
If you're close to 6,500 LBS go with the V8. If it's well within range for the Tacoma to pull than I would go with the newer transmission

Sounds like 2k plus max..... Either will be a breeze. Your choice.

Obviously the v8 will handle higher speeds and air resistance better. So trip length and speed "could" be issue. Unless you feel you need security of need vehicle , your call

well the v8 in the old 4th gens had ~320 torque, but the mpg was like the tundra 10-12 towing, 15 tops normal driving.

Do not expect a six to be much more econmical when towing, more torque is actually more efficient unde load. Only an advantage for new truck when not towing.

We get 14-15 in town, 18-19 hwy V8 3" lift, armor, 35's with our 05 4runner. Similar or better to my 07 v6 Tacoma I had with similar mods, so I'd take the v8 any day
    Tows pretty decent too.

06 V6 here on 34's and I can't even crack 15 highway. Towed 5k with it awhile ago and it was interesting.

Yeah from my experience with the Tacoma v6, and knowing a little about the 4runner V8 we looked specifically for one with the V8.
Its got a couple things going for it...
    Dual VVT-i (05+ v8)
    more torque and HP
4.10 gears vs the V6 3.73 factory gearing

The V8 is much more suited to being loaded than the v6, both from a power/tq advantage, as well as the gear reduction advantage.

actually towing with the 4.0 v6 was worse than the v8. think we got between 8-12mpg towing 550miles with a 5x8 uhaul trailer for the daughter to college.

Allot comes down to what is being towed, it's aerodynamic drag, etc. For example, I have a 16 foot fishing boat that would come in right around 2,000 pounds once you add in the boat, engine, trailer, batteries, gas, gear, etc. It's also pretty low profile and would have very little drag.

My truck is bone stock. On the highway not towing I get 20-21 MPG. Towing my boat I get 15-16 MPG.

    I had a 2004 V8 and loved it.

It towed a lot better than my 2011 DCSB.

Usually tow stuff like this and used to tow 2 4wheelers. But have had as much as a yard and a half of river rock in there no problem. 04 V8 with 204k+ miles..

I'd imagine the Tacoma handles better though. Much longer wheel base. Hopefully the new leafs hold weight better than the old. I had to put airbags in my 4runner just to hook up my trailer. I've had around 5000 lbs behind it and it pulled fine, handling was less than desirable though. It is a 3rd gen though, they weren't as big as the 4th gen.
